a friend of mine is offering me an outstanding deal on a 2004 trail cruiser 30qbss. there's only one catch...his plug came out and his freezer defrosted and he had 2 pounds of ground meat in it...it was weeks before he noticed, and the meat rotted to the point of maggots. he cleaned out the fridge and has aired out the camper, but the minute you walk in the door, the smell hits you. he has not tried to do anything else to clean it. i would really like to make the purchase, but only if the smell can be removed. he's not motivated to clean it, he said he can sell it at an auto auction and get back what he has in it. can this smell be elminated? how? are there professional companies that do this? how much does a new fridge cost if that's necessary? i'm new to this and willing to spend some $ to fix the problem (that's how good a deal this is!), but i need some guidance/suggestions...thoughts??

I say pick it up if it is as good of a deal as you say, pull the fridge out and have it replaced totally. Will cost a little $, but will get a new fridge and hopefully no smell. If it has carpet, pull that up and put some other down - in case the smell "found its way" into the carpet. Just my opinion

1.) He can sell an '04 at auction and get back what he has in it? Doubt that.....I'd love to see the numbers, for giggles!
2.) But, any good fire cleanup outfit should be able to get rid of the smell---probably even come to you to do it.
Good luck!

yes, you can get rid of the smell, might take several tries, offer less and take the unit home.

Check out THIS post. I used active enzymes with great success. Nothing else worked for me.

Go to a rental store and rent a ozone generator, grerat for getting rid of odors. Had a freezer that died and stunk up my whole shop and that is how I got rid of it.

Some other things to try: Powdered charcoal will absorb odors. Put it in an old stocking or spread it on trays. Also fresh ground coffee does well. Finally, wash with vanilla. Of course Arm & Hammer baking soda spread out and also used as a wash. We left a package of sausage in the freezer and the wife had to work at it but it was as good as new.

If it's such a good deal, you can always replace the refrigerator. The Trail-lite is R-Vision's middle of the line trailer and pretty well made. We really like ours. If you want to know more about this trailer, go to http://www.r-visioncamping.org/ Lots of happy owners there.

Ever thought of trying Febreeze?
They're making a 'heavy duty' version of the stuff, and I'm telling you it works.
Think about the worst smell you've ever come across.
For lots of people, it's going to be something nearly everyone that gets on the road sees every day...
Road kill.... specifically SKUNK road kill.
We moved to a new home several months ago. This one is out in the country a little bit, enough so that the 'critters' come out at night. It took us several months to get our fence put in around the back yard. Long story, won't go into it here.
So, before our fence was finally put in, my two little doggies decided one morning to run over into the neighbors yard. I couldn't see what had peaked their interest, but THEY could see it.
It took about three seconds for the both of them to make it to the neighbors yard, and about ONE second to get back.
Holy Nasty Smell, Batman!!!
They both had been skunked!
The male got the most of it (only because he can run faster than the female) and when they got back into my yard they both proceeded to do donuts in the grass! First on one side of their face, then on the other. If it hadn't been quite so stinky, it really would've been hi-larious!
Well, my SIL had the same problem with two of her little wiener-dogs. They live even further out in the country, and her dogs have been skunked numerous times. What she discovered is that Febreeze will kill the skunk smell to a point where it is barely detectable. Repeated use will eventually get rid of the smell, although I think only TIME will do that. The Febreeze will at least make it tollerable to human nose.
After thinking about using the Febreeze, I read the ingredients of the stuff. Besides the fragrance, the majority of what is in Febreeze is derived from corn!
So, my point here is that if you have some kind of stinky smell in your fridge, I'd give the Febreeze thing a go. I think that if Febreeze is good enough to get rid of skunk stink, it would probably give decayed meat stink a run for it's money as well.
Worth a try and a he** of alot cheaper than a new fridge.
One other thing I just thought of.... I'm pretty sure you can take the interior of the freezer section out. This will allow you to get rid of the insulation that is around the freezer section, as I'm sure the smell migrated into it as well.
Hope this helps.
