Your mileage seems better than most get with that truck. I know two guys that have that same truck and both of them claim 12 MPG around town.

A 1500 HD is a standard 3/4 ton & with 6.0 & 4:10 gears you are doing excellent. A 1/2 ton with 5.3 engine & 3:73 gears would do better empty but would not handle a very heavy trailer.

With 4.10s that sounds normal.

My hemi/4.10 combo averages about 13-14 overall, 11 around town, and 7.5 to 8.5 towing 9500 lbs. As a previous poster said, I figure that's the price I pay for towing a heavy brick.
I'm might save a couple hundred dollars a year by switching to a diesel, but I like the convenience of having a gas truck. I was considering going to a diesel for towing through the mountains but I pulled a 6% grade this summer in Western NC that was roughtly 6 miles long and never dropped below 50 mph. I rarely see inclines like that so I can live with my hemi.

Our old truck, 2500HD 4X4 CC SB 6.0 and 4.10's got 15MPG at its best with pure hwy driving on cruise control and minimal hills to pull and empty. Thats about 4.5 years and 35K miles worth of driving.
Towing My Sons 25' TT, She got 7.5-8 MPG,
Towing Our T H at 8-9K lbs depending on hauling toys and water and fuel 4-5 Mpg at the worst 6 at its best.
Looks like your numbers are right in the ballpark!!

I don't know about these diesel owners who claim fuel milage better than a gas engine gets. My 2006 Cummins gets 11 mpg both around town and hauling my truck camper, and about 14 mpg towing my almost-not-there single motorcycle trailer. That's at 65 mph. It might get better when it's broken in (it only has 6000 miles on it) but I'm not holding my breath.
At least diesel is back costing less than premium gas (in Pittsburgh, anyway).

Mileage sounds about right to me. I get 17~mpg interstate at 70mph with my 3.73 ratio, tall .67 O/D and tall 265/70 R17 tires. The GM has smaller diameter tires and a slightly shorter O/D so it with it's 4.10 gears would put you at a comparable rpm with my truck if I had 4.56 ratio. That gives you better towing power and lower mileage. If I had a 4.56 ratio, I would expect my mileage would be closer to yours.
My four Cummins powered Rams all gave 19~mpg interstate at 70mph, 18.5mpg city and 10.5~mpg towing our TT's. I would hope they're worth more when I traded them. They cost more when I bought them.

There are so many variables with mileage, as evidenced by the responses here. My 2000 F250 extended cab short bed 2wd 7.3PSD, limited slip 3.73 rear end, with factory tires (Wrangler A/T), averaged almost on the dot 13.7 mpg towing our 21' lightweight TT. My best was 14mpg. That truck was rarely empty on the highway, but the few times it was the best it got was 19 mpg, and it averaged 15-17 mpg. This is over 3 years of using the trip odometer to figure mileage.
My present truck, 2008 F250 CrewCab 5.4L limited slip 3.73 2wd, factory tires (Pirelli Scorpions) averages 9.7 mpg towing our 21' TT so far. Again, it is rarely empty on the highway, but it seems to be able to get around 14.5 mpg on the highway.
Basically, my 7.3L diesel was getting close to 50% better fuel mileage than my present 5.4L gas, towing the exact same trailer (9.7mpg vs 13.7mpg).
Everyone's setup is different, the best you can do is sort of average out the responses from people with similar setups. What else can you do?

Are there other trucks out there that'll do the work and give me a break when not pulling the payload?
I like the fact that this truck has 8600 lb. gvwr. I like the truck it's self but man it costs to drive it!
Any good ideas?
I have a 2006 Suburban 2500 with the 8.1L and 4.10 axle. Like your 1500HD, it has an 8600 lb. GVWR. While I have a bigger engine and probably more weight, I also have a GV overdrive that helps a lot with highway mileage. I get about 7-8 mpg towing a 32 foot, 8,000 pound trailer. When not towing, I get about 12-13 mpg around town, and as high as 17.5 mpg highway (65 mph, no AC). So, based on what I've experienced, I would think your 8-10 towing and 15 light sounds about right.
