You can bring an unlocked cell phone with you (buy one on Craigslist for less than $100) or buy one there. The Telcel shop will help you to sign up for this plan and insert sim card in your phone. The one catch is, when you purchase this plan, the rates only apply from the area code you are registered in. If you call from another area code, you pay standard roaming rates. Good luck!

Good information. I also have heard that now you can change from Movistar, keeping your same number, to Telcel. I don't know what the charge is though.

Also, Telcel offers a GS3 card that you can insert into your pc. Wherever you have signal, you have internet. It works very well. However, this is on a contract basis and the monthly charge for unlimited internet use is 650 pesos. It might be worth it for some who are here for a longer period of time.
