Had a nice weekend up north, cooler weather & pine tree's really can be found in Az.
Anyway, on the way back down to the valley a 5'er passes me coming down the hills, no big deal since I was only traveling 50-55 mph. However, some SUV who didn't tie his stuff down good, loses a duffle bag & all it's belongings in the left lane.
So...the car in front of the 5'er jumps back over to the right lane but the 5'er (who's traveling too close to the car) has to brake hard to avoid the stuff in the road, tries to switch lanes quickly (which he did) but made the 5'er swerve quite a bit... and I think he dirtied his shorts. Thought for a second he was going to have major problems, definately a scary moment.
The remainder of the trip down the hill, he never leaves my sight. Yeah, he slowed it down quite a bit...
Maybe it was a lesson learned???
And why can't these tent campers tie their stuff down better???
We see stuff on the highway every time we travel that road...

I generally would prefer to hit stuff than risk accident from swerving.
Driving slower with more distance between always minimizes such issues.
Happens all too often.

I had one of those "close encounters of the flying stuff" kind a few years back while towing our Harley in a cargo trailer to Florida. Monster tanker truck merging on my right and passing traffic to the left of me and a Suzuki sidekick that merged ahead of me loses a huge duffel bag off of it's roof. Everyone was watching to see the carnage as I would probably swerve into either of the already occupied lanes. I just remember saying something to my wife along the lines "hold on this is going to hurt"! The pick up mangled the bag but the trailer launched into the air and landed hard. The tanker truck and I both pulled into the next rest stop and I opened up the trailer to shovel the pieces of Harley into piles, but as the trucker approached and I dropped the ramp door, everything was fine inside. His comment was "I don't believe it, that thing was so high in the air, I could see the cars in the other lane underneath it." Very lucky, good solid trailer, good alko rubber-flex suspension, many excellent tiedowns.
Today is just the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!

I have always been a firm believer in a safe distance when following. Now that I tow a 10,000 fiver, it seems 10 times more impoortant. And because people dont want to recognize that you are just keeping a safe distance,(and not inviting other vehicles in front), It becomes a constant, 100% focus when I go down the highway at 60-65 when towing.
I was coming up 95 north from Myrtle beach a few months ago, heavy traffic, I saw brake lights several cars ahead, not sure why, but i merged to the shoulder,(after looking), just in case, a split second later, traffic stopped almost instantly. Just before this, cars were merging in front of me. If I wouldnt have merged into the shoulder, well, you can imagine...

Simple solution............travel 50 -55mph while towing the 5er. Let all the crazies fly by me in their big hurry. Arive at my destination relaxed...

When I ride my motorcyle on the highway I see plenty of a-holes carrying******on their roof held on by twine, pickups with stuff flying all over their bed and landscape trailers hauling 10,000lb loads on 12" tires...trust me, I stay way back or blow by them.
I just wish people would think.

I learned my lesson years ago about using those roof racks. We had an 83 S10 Blazer with the roof rack. The whole rack and our belongings blew off. When I saw how they had attached the rack to the roof, I never used it again. It had rubber plugs that expanded when the screws were tightened.
