I am changing my oil, and I cannot remember if I have the faulty V10 oil dipstick or not. 2000 Ford 6.8L V10. I remember that some have faulty dipsticks causing an incorrect reading. Mine is the yellow "T" handle style. Can't remember if it is the faulty one or not. I suspect that it is the faulty one, because when adding 6 quarts it reads toward the bottom of the dipstick range. Can anyone refresh my memory on the Ford faulty dipstick thing?

If you've added 6 quarts (the correct amount with a filter change) and the dipstick still reads low, you have a bad dipstick. Take a file and notch the dipstick at the top of the current oil level----now you have a "good" dipstick.

The correct dip stick has a loop handle on it's end. When you do an oil change with filter change use 6 quarts of oil.......

This is from the Ford TSB,

"TSB 01-10-05 Issue:: On some 6.8L equipped Super Duty F-53 Motorhome chassis vehicles, the oil level readings on the engine oil level indicator (dipstick) may read inaccurate (low) when the actual levels are within acceptable limits and adequate oil vloume is in the sump. This may be noticed after an oil change, 5.7 L (6 guarts) of oil are added, and the engine has been started to fill the galleys and filter. the engine oil level indicator may then indicate 0.47 to 0.95 L (1/2 to 1 quart) low. This may be caused by the oil level indicator design. Action::: remove engine oil level indicator and replace with new design engine Oil Level Indicator (F81Z-6750-HC) which has correct markings to record oil levels at acceptable ranges. The new indicator has a "loop" handle. The Prior indicator has a "Tee" stick-type handle." This covers 1999-2001 SUPER DUTY F-53 STRIPPED CHASSIS. "

Original poster. Suggest you either buy the proper dip stick OR...
On flat, level ground, drain your oil, install a new filter, add exactly six quarts of oil and then wipe dipstick and check oil. Mark/etch/engrave your dipstick where the oil level displays on the dipstick so you can check you oil/ ascertain oil level using that wrong dipstick.

Forgot to mention. 8-) IF your rig has say an --add on-- oil cooler you will be using more then 6 quarts to fill. It will be 6.5 or possibly 7 quarts.

I have the tee handle. What I did was drained the oil and changed the filter, added 5 qts, ran the engine for a few minutes, let it sit and marked the dip stick, added the 6th qt, ran the engine again for a few minutes and let it sit. Removed the stick and marked at the new level, now I have a new full mark and one for a qt low. This is only for guys that are too cheap to buy the right dip stick!!

The t-handle was the incorrect one. I discovered this after buying my rig and reading this forum.

I don't like messing around with tick marks and the like when trying to determine my engine's correct oil level so I spent the $25 or so and ordered one from the local ford place. Now I don't have to worry about it.

Mine did take approximately 6 quarts when I changed it the other day. I use bulk oil jugs and not individual quarts but it was real close. I am not sure if I have an oil cooler. I haven't paid attention.

I have the loop handle on a 2008 Monaco Monarch.

When the local ford dealer did the oil change I asked the tech how much oil he put in and he said 7 quarts and my manual says it takes 6 quarts so I think they over-filled my oil because on the dipstick the level of oil is 1/4 inch past the full mark/XXX marks so I'm taking it back in tomorrow to have them check and hopefully they can drain a quart out pretty easily.

To clarify......

It's 6 qts for the older V10 2 valve motor and 7 qts if it's the newer 3 valve V10 motor. The original posted was talking about a 2 valve V10 so 6 quarts was mentioned in replies to his post.
