We will be leaving Monument Valley sometime next week and heading to St. Louis for a few days before ending a wonderful trip to Yellowstone, GTNP, and southern Utah. Streets & Trips shows the most direct route thru Moab to I-70, thru CO, Kansas. Or, I can take a more southern route via I-40 at Gallup, thru NM, Texas, then up thru Oklahoma City. Mileage difference is not much. My only concern is snow in the higher elevations on I-70 in CO.

Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated.

This time of year you won't have any problem with snow in Colorado
on I-70,

We made that trip this last spring from central Missouri.
On the way out we took the route through Oak City on I40. I40 is one of the roughest interstate highway I have been on. Like to beat us to death. On the way back we came from Moab down to Durango for a few days then on over I25 then up to I70 and on home.

There should be little or no snow on the Colorado passes next week. If there is it will be cleared in a few hours.
Randy is right about I40 in eastern Okla, take I70.

If you go through Moab don't go straight up to I-70. Take the road on the north side of Moab that follows the south side of the river up to I-70. It's a gorgeous drive with several federal campgrounds right on the river.

You won't be on I-40 in E. Oklahoma, you will be on I-44 from Ok. City through Tulsa all the way to St. Louis. Made that trip in reverse a couple of weeks ago.
Two weeks before that, I took I-40 east from Ok. City into Arkansas - no problems.
If you take I-44, it is a toll road all the way from Ok. City to Joplin.

The road out of Moab - along the river - is 128 and is a beautiful drive in the fall. Connects with I 70 then head east. As others say - much better ride than I 40.

Busskipper again, on the route home – head into Colorado it will not disappoint, this IMHO is the best time to travel in Colorado, you will only get snow at the high mountain passes and then only if you are lucky. With our home base being in Maryland we have spent much of the last two years in Colorado (actually have two or three winters in Golden, and have loved it) this time of year just keep your eyes/ears on the weather and you will be fine – if you get any weather it is usually cleared up very quickly, basically evaporates – not like the east coast where it will just hang around for weeks.

You will be leaving from Monument Valley I would head to Mesa Verde and into the San Juan’s and some of the most beautiful areas on the planet. Then you can head up around thru or actually up and back down to see some of the great wild areas of Colorado – with the 4X4 you will be able to catch a few of the old mining trails and you may never want to leave.

I can go on and on but if you want just PM me and I’ll give you a call to give you a number of options on the trip in Colorado and then back home.

Take a look at these pictures by Stan Parker this is a great resource for your trip and on spaces and places to travel – you will see some great shots of many of the wild areas in this region. Stan has traveled this area both early and late in the seasons and has some great shots.

The last time we traveled I-70 in Kansas, about four years ago, much of it had been rebuilt or repaved. It was like driving on silk. Much of I-70 in Missouri has also been repaved, but there's still still some work to do.
