I contacted a couple of out of state online Honda dealers for a EU2000i generator and was told that they could not ship a CARB compliant generator to California. Some would however send one that is OK for all other states. First of all, what is the difference between the two models? Secondly, is there something illegal about buying or using a non-compliant model?

I've had the same question and took a look at the Honda web site and parts manuals. CARB compliance requires a spark arester on the exhaust for one (Which all the Honda units aparently already have). I purchased my EU2000 from Camping World on a sale about 9 months before they started advertising CARB compliant generators. I've never had a problem using mine anywhere HOWEVER there are some places I've been (when I didn't have my gererator with me) that had signs posted stating that CARB compliance was required. These were mainly offroad places that required this for Off-Road vehicles as well as generators used in those areas.

From what I can tell though the spark arrestor is the main thing. There is a difference between the two models though which most likely deals with emissions. The fuel cap is different as well. I would imagine that the California one meets certain standards for evaporation from the fuel tank when the vent is open for operation. Not sure otherwise. Honda does in fact have two different SKU #'s for their generators with the CARB compliant one being stamped appropriately should you get inspected. I would question any company though that would send you a non-CARB compliant generator if the delivery address is California as it's illegal for them to sell them here these days.

If you want all the technical stuff about CARB compliance check here

BTW you can tell if it's a California model by looking at the model number.

Honda EU2000iAC is California CARB compliant.
Honda EU2000iAN is for all other states.

The difference isn't much, I think it's just the gas cap. But it is likely that non-CA dealers don't have CARB generators and the dealers willing to sell a non-CARB unit to you are betting on it not getting checked somewhere along the way. And yes, it is illegal to buy an non-CARB generator in California. It is not illegal to use one there, yet.

I hope there's an upgrade kit when it does be come illegal in Calif.
I assume the external tanks are at issue as well?

I just checked the serial number on mine. the tag says EU2000iA. Nothing else.
I bought mine from Mayberry. I believe they are in New Jersey or somewhere around there. I had no problen in them shipping it to me. They were about $350.00 cheeper than the local Honda shop each. Honda wanted about $1120 each I paid about $830.00 each plus I didn't have to pay sales tax of 8.25%.

Those are the folks that wouldn't ship to CA. Called today.

Mine does not have the C. I bought it new in April 2005 at the local Camping World store.

If I can no longer use it in California then either:

1) Camping World violated the implied warranty of merchantability, meaning it is not suited for the purpose that I bought it for

or

2) California passed a retroactive law, and there are some laws about that in terms of they have to reimburse me for my loss of use of property due to their law. I should be grand fathered in.

Two different models seems rather silly. Mayberry told me that the only difference is the gas cap. If so, why doesn't Honda just provide two caps or one that will satisfy the most restrictive state requirement? Or is that too simple of a solution?

Acording to the Honda website:

USDA-Qualified Spark Arrestor/Muffler

All Honda generators are equipped with United States Department of Agriculture qualified spark arrestors to help prevent fires.

According to the Mayberrys website:

Honda Generators meet all CARB and EPA emission standards.

You're correct! I wonder why they told me different over the phone?
