Recently, I was coming down the mogollon rim between Heber, AZ and
Payson, AZ and was using the exhaust brake. Very shortly after
turning the exhaust brake on, I started to smell a hot odor in
the cab that sorta smelled like burning oil. Turned the exhaust brake off and the odor went away. Again, coming out of Payson towards the valley, I again used the exhaust brake and again the odor appeared. The RPM's were high but not too high and the oil pressure was nearly pegged. I checked the oil when I arrived in the valley and it is full. Does anyone have any idea where that smell may be coming from? Have you heard of it before? I have nearly 11,000 miles on this unit and this is the first time I have smelled this odor. I used the exhaust brake quite a bit up and down the mountains between here and San Diego on Interstate 8 and never had this odor before now.

Just for information, I took delivery of this unit on 2/25/08 and
(knock on wood) have had virtually NO problems. In the 11,000 miles,
about 9,000 is measured for fuel milage and I am averaging 9.7 mpg.
That is continously towing the Saturn and both flat and mountain
driving.

i have an 08 35gs and i have used the exhaust brake a lot from victoria canada to florida and back. oil pressure should not be effected by the exhaust brake. check the entire exhaust from the manifold gaskets to the tailpipe more than likely there is a leak ahead of the exhaust brake.

I'd take it straight to a GM dealer and have them check it out. I would not attempt to guess the problem, but from the sounds of it and your driving pattern it is not something you want to go un checked by a professional.
