Some are very nice, like the one we visited in PA - Twin Grove -, while others are run down and in general pretty uninviting. You'd think that there would be franchise standards so that one could expect some minimum level of quality.
safe travels,
I would say that the quality of KOAs is much more "even" than just taking a cr@pshoot. at least they do have inspection teams, minimal standards etc.
going thru my data base on KOAs at least 2/3-3/4 of them I would return to.

If I'm "camping" we stay in state or federal parks. If I'm traveling we will stay in KOA's because they are generally right off the highway, have cable and Wifi. We have stayed in quite a few and there has been only one that I would not go back to. On our most recent trip, we stayed in five campgrounds. Three of those were sites on the water. Our favorite was the Bar Harbor KOA. Your neighbor on these sites are close, but they have arranged them in such a way that the front of your camper is facing the water. We loved sitting there and watching the sunset and the tides.

This is pretty much what the membership programs are about. You buy the card, then you feel obligated to go to KOA's to "get your money's worth" out of the membership. It's no different than buying a membership to Camping World, Thousand Trails, Good Sam, etc. Basically, you're pre-paying for part of your purchasing experience, but mainly you're getting locked in to buying their service so that you can get the most out of your membership purchase cost. To get 10% off of a product or service that is already inflated 20% doesn't make much sense to me.

jay2003, your best friend is a bully. It is very easy to abuse a minimum wage cashier who is trying to adhere to a store policy which may or not make sense. Why not ask to see a manager if he is so upset at not getting change? Besause thats what a bully does when he does not get his way....pick on the defenseless.

I thought KOA stood for "Keep Out America". Way too pricey for me, but then I don't need or want the pool, game room, miniature golf, etc., which naturally raise the prices.

Not to get off topic but I would only agree with you if he hadn't already made a purchase and just forgot to ask for change during that transaction (never leaving the counter) and was willing to wait through the next customer in line. Yes if he had just walked up and asked for change and handn't made a purchase then yes the cashier would have had to follow policy. Sorta like the OP standing at the counter of the KOA and trying to do all the transactions at the same time. The point of the story is that sometimes people at the counters of businesses aren't willing to work with you and provide real customer assistance. That concept is sorta lost in a lot of the US these days.

Then maybe there are legitimate reasons that cause KOA to get bashed so much.
