I have a 1999 Land Rover Discovery 4x4 Series 1. I have driven myself crazy trying to find out if it can be towed 4-down. I have talked to at least a dozen dealers and the LR corporate office, and the results are very unclear. I would say it is 50/50 on if it can be done. I used to have a Jeep GC Laredo 4x4 and used the same method to put the LR in tow-mode. That is: 1.Transfer case is neutral 2. Transmission in Park 3. Key in #1 position for unlocking steering wheel. It rolls fine using this method. The online manual states that it can be used behind an RV, just follow the "Vehicle Recovery" method, which is exactly what I just explained. My local LR dealer does not recommend, saying the transmission will heat up too much. Does anyone have a solid answer?? PLEASE help!! Thanks! Wayne

I want to go for it, just a little apprehensive. Does the drive shaft still spin in "tow-mode" on Jeep's? LR said it does on their vehicles.

The Jeep driveshafts do spin in tow mode. The transfercase being in newral keeps the transmission from turning. I would tow LR for about ten to fifteen miles at regular speed and then feel of the transfercase and transmission to see if you are getting heat buildup.

THE BOOK is the final authority, IMO.
The people at the dealership often don't have a clue. Doesn't matter if they are sales or service, they don't have a clue. For instance, our Jeep Liberty transfer case has two settings for "4HI", "PART TIME 4X4" and "FULL TIME 4X4". The mechanic and the service writer at the dealership told me I should NOT run the transfer case in the "FULL TIME" position on dry roads, because it might bind up and break something. I told them to read the Owner's Manual.
If you have followed the instructions in THE BOOK, you are good to go.

This is a Land Rover , Not a Jeep there is nothing in common ! From My Tow Truck Days ,I can tell You that the recovery method is correct for Your LR. Jeeps are an entirely a different story!

What is different? The description given for the Land Rover sounds VERY much like the instructions for either of my Jeeps, if not downright identical. I could go get the Manual for the Liberty or the Rubicon, but it is dark and chilly out there, and I don't want to.
So, what IS the "entirely different story" for Jeeps?

I had a Land Rover Discovery Series II. I was considering towing it but it was just too heavy (and unreliable mechanically) so I got rid of it. The owners manual clearly stated that to tow the vehicle 4-down the transfer case should be in neutral and the transmission in park. The owners manual was very clear in the fact that it could be towed. No mention of other modifications having to be made.

What are you towing it with? It is a heavy vehicle and well exceeds the common 5,000lbs limit for a gas MH.

SK - can you elaborate on the maintenance? I just got offered a very sweetheart deal on a 99 Series II. But I don't want to buy a junker Even if is a great smokin' deal. btw, it is listed at 4700# - close but below my 5k Limit. Since I don't tow much but I do tow in mountains I'm paying attention to all the bits and pieces.
