Hi,

Out of all the tools you had in your stick house, what tools did you decide were absolutely necessary to carry when full-timing?
How did you organize them/store them?

Thanks

I had way too many people helping me pack and store the stuff from my home to be able to be out by closing.I clearly marked the stuff RV or Storage Unit.

I asked a couple of times if my tool box was in the MH, yup, yup and yup was the answer I got. Closing turned into a zoo act and when all was said and done I hit the road.

First time I needed the tool box I opened the bay and there sat the tiny "for little repairs around the home and minor truck repairs" tool box. They put the wrong one in the MH. Ya, Ya, Ya. I should have checked but didn't.
I've been on the road for several months now and have needed fix it yourself repairs and guess what? I really didn't need that honkin heavy RV tool box with every tool known to man in it, that I 'had' been schleping around for the past few years.

Hammer, rubber mallet, screw drivers, pliers, open end wrenches, socket set, hose clamps, screws, wire, duct tape....Has gotten me by so far, as I pay the monthly storage fee where my so called RV tool box sits.

I just put my entire tool box in the storage bay. Didn't have that many to start with so it was easy. So far I have used hammers, dikes, needle nose, slot and phillips screwdrivers, assorted open end and socket wrenches, allen drivers, that funny square drive thingy, rescue tape, electrical tape and various sealants, glues and lubricating potions.

When I decided to stock tools in the RV, I used the list of tools that Camping World RV training courses require:

I took the basic hand tools which are in a Craftsman plastic tool box. All that is stored in my aluminum bed mounted tool box with a floor jack, 12 ton bottle jack, lug wrench etc. I also kept my Craftsman air compressor stored in the 5th wheel storage bin, it comes in very handy. I don't carry more than I would probably use for on the road problems.

I plan for self rescue capability. I travel solo and seldom does anyone know I'm on the road much less where I'm at or when I'm expected to arrive anywhere else. Short of a transmission, catastrophic engine failure or major wheel bearing problems, I can usually fix it or at least get into limp to town mode.

I'm carrying every tool I have which at last rough count was around 500 pieces and about 200lbs plus a compressor, two bottle jacks, jack stands and the obligatory shop manuals. People think I'm crazy but when you need the tools, you really need them. (An 11mm wrench? Who the heck would ever need a 11mm wrench? It turns out that I did a few years ago for a carburetor) Primary high use tools are in one box that's fairly portable and easily accessable, secondary less used tools are in the other box which is too heavy to carry around.
Nutters, maybe, but so far I've managed to either totally avoid problems with proper maintenance, bypass horrific labor rates and worst case limp the vehicle into town.

Other than the standard wrench/socket set and normal assortment of screwdrivers and pliers, I have a small tree saw- never know when you may need to take off a branch to get into a space - and I kept my Riobi battery power tools (screwdriver/flashlights, circular saw - which I used the other day to make some blocks for under the stands - and a saber saw). It all went into the basement in a toolbox and a storage bin along with some spare parts, buffing wheel - came in handy when one of those road gators got the front of the car, buffed right out.

Basically I'd say judge your ability to use them and then take the things that you're comfortable using and will need for the repairs you feel competent to perform.
