Good question.
I prefer chains because cables I have tried repeatedly got pinched or jammed in the tow bar.

They are both used, I don't think there is much difference from a safety point. The should both be able to do the job if the ratings are sufficient and the quality is good.
I use straight cables because they fit in the tunnels that are part of my tow bar, and therefore they don't drag or get tangled.

Hi,
I have been using cables for the past 10 years, and find they work great, are coated with plastic so they don't scratch, and are rated at 5,000 pounds. They also recoil, so they are less likely to drag on the ground.

Both are good. I prefer chains I guess working construction and using them many years have something to do with it.

Depends on the chain or cable.. The safety chains on my junk trailer I strongly suspect are not strong enough.. The safety cables I use on my towed have proven they ARE strong enough... Alas, the hard way.
However they are a lot stronger.. Chains I've used in the past on other trailers are stronger still. It all depends on the chain or cable.
Whichever you choose.. DO NOT buy cheap. Do not skimp on safety devices.

This might answer your question all semi's and dolly converters and trailers use chains over cables! There's a reason for this it's called strength. Rooster

Since you are talking about safety chains/cables, make sure that the cable or chain wraps around the frame, not just hooks to the base plate. There have been several posts here in the last 6 months about bade plates coming off. Safety chains that only connect to the base plate are not safety chains.

Yes. Use one or the other. And it really doesn't matter which as long as it's strong enough, properly fastened and not damaged so as to lose strength. Chains tend to be a little more flexible, probably have a very slight amount of "give", tend to cost more and weigh more. Cables don't rattle, much handier for carrying on your bicycle for locking it up. My trailers all have chains. With latching hooks.

Hi
I use both, whichever hangs the best. I have had the toad detach once and I can tell you that the cables held. As for the base plate to car cables/chains I could fing no place to connect them to our '97 Civic. The hold down rings on the car are removed to install the plate. Blue Ox could not suggest where to attach them when I called. I had a pro check for me and he said that the frame is really just bent sheet metal and that chains or cables would simply pull through it. Welding on an attachment point would weaken the frame also. I check the bolts a lot.
