Arnold couldn't have been more wrong!!

As a 30+ year firefighter I have seen (more times than I could stomach) the result of driving while distracted. That includes eating, talking/texting on a cell phone, having a pet in your lap, etc.

Let's face it, you are the pilot of over a ton of moving metal. The damage that your vehicle can do to another vehicle, let alone a human body is awesome.

While you are driving, you should be totally concentrated on what you are doing. The results, if you are not, are tragic and can change the lives forever of those involved.

Every time a new law is passed, and no consideration is given to enforcement, it waters down the respect people have for the law. I still see loads of people on their cell phones, they make U-turns across double yellow lines, 80 is the average speed on the I-5, trucks (and MH's and cars towing boats) ride all the lanes, dogs poop on the grass and it goes unnoticed by owners, radios are too loud, parties go on past midnight, and gardeners and construction workers start way before 7AM. I'm sure you can add to this short list. Civil law already penalizes people who cause accidents. How about enforcing the current law that requires a drivers license and insurance for all drivers in California. Just my opinion. Thank's Arnold.

None of it is needed, and particularly not the texting law. But the dog thing as well. Its a simple ticket, LE just needs to write it. Unfortunately, they don't.

I one time (as a young copper) asked a "Chippie" as we call our Highway Patrol, what do you write a person for when they are putting on make-up or eating an enchilada (with a fork!) while driving down the freeway? His reply was so obvious I wondered why I'd needed to ask... "speed." Basic Speed Law in CA says you can't drive faster than is safe for the condition. Safe speed for putting on mascara or typing a text message? Zero, by the side of the road. Which means that if you are doing 70 while texting, you're going um... 70 miles per hour over the "speed limit." Oops! That Chippie was nuts (really, we were taking him to the hospital) but he was unquestionably correct.

As for the dog thing, you can't drive with any condition that inhibits your ability to control the car, and a dog in your lap most assuredly does.

Unfortunately, most patrol coppers are neither enthused nor well-versed in traffic enforcement, and the CHP writes speed only, and not that kind of speed. They want to catch people going real fast, that's all they seem to do.
