the overhead in my truck is just a tad (.4 to.6) lower than pencil figures. I don't reset often and with a 600 mile a week commute its all highway miles. Many times the puter and the pencil were with in a couple of tenths.

That's what I find too, with my Buick and to me it's close enough. Whose to say whether the computer or the mind is more accurate.

Lets say it this way. If you started full, you need to end up full.

Or start and end exactly the same but we only seem to know for sure when full - at least our best guess.

Now if I can only convince the wife not to add in the initial fillup gallons.

The computer is only as accurate as the instrumentation that it has. And, I'd love to see documentation that shows 100th of a gallon. With a 30 gallon tank, each gallon represents 3.3% of the tank. 1/100 of each gallon would be 0.03% of the tank. This would be way too expensive to put into production fuel tanks.

In the DRBIII, Chrysler`s diagnostic tool, you can read many different perameters of the engine`s operating system. one of which is fuel level and percentage, and yes it does read down to 1/100 of a gal. it also reads the level in voltage. that is how it converts it over to galllons. and it`s not expensive to put into production, it`s just in the programming!

And even if it was off by +/- .4, it`s still fairly accurate. but like I said before, the majority of the time the hand calculations will be off. especially if you thought you filled the truck up all the way, the truck may have been on an angle and when you thought it was full it actually had an air pocket that may not have allowed 2 gallons in the tank!

Hand calculating relies on the accuracy of the fuel stations' pumps and your feel/visual for where you top off.

They can be off just like the vehicle's trip computer.

I use the vehicle's information center to keep tabs on my mileage, because the same computer and fuel sensor is working for me.

This allows me to keep tabs on my driving habits/conditions and vehicle's state of maintenance.

This also frees up brain space for other more important matters.

When someone asks me what kind of mileage I get, I have to say about 8 to 9 towing or 13 to 15 empty around town. Any more accurate figure is just a guess on the operator's part, the station pump's part and your vehicles information center's part.

Flame suit on!

no flame from me. I always give my average mpg which is easy with a 600-630 mile a week commute when not towing vs averaging several tanks while towing the 5er for several thousand mile trips. The puter is always close when averaging or even just a best/worst tank. Many folks give their best tank as their mpg figure.
When I hauled to make a living I kept log on miles driven and gallons used which my wife being a bookkeeper kept everthing on her puter. Made for interesting mpg average on certain trips carring certain loads and on certain terrain.

Good post! I hadn`t even considered the accuracy of all the different stations pumps. I agree wit hjust giving an avg. it stops any form of disagreement, or at least it should!

I try to use the same station, same pump, setting on slowest fill setting, let it fill untill it clicks off (only once). I have written down hand calc and computer mpg and fuel used and mpg are really close. I have logged every single tank of fuel this way since it was new.

If my Jeep Wrangler is any indication, this method may be off too. Add in same time of day to the requirements. I got tired of driving off with 7/8 fillup and started topping off the tank, esp if I'm not parking right away.

All this is why you want to average out many fillups over time.
