Got a friend from Ca. that's visiting us in Wa. He's got a check engine light lit up on a Cat engine and loses power on hills. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be. Engine isn't running hot and all the fluid levels are ok.

It has a sensor gone bad, some times make the choke come on with a gas engine, will need to take it in and have it put on a computer and have it read, have fun,,,,,,Richard

Clogged filters due to algea build-up from diesel fuel? That can be detected in tank by doing a test. The filters once they are plugged need replacement, but if you have an algea problem in the tank, it will just plug next filter. Use of additives in fuel tanks is needed, as you never know what the fuel has in it, when filling up at different stations.

if the check engine light is ON, you need to read the CODE that is stored. That's why they put a "Light" in the system so you could be warned of a problem and be directed to what caused the problem. Without reading the CODE, everybody is just guessing what it could mean. Regardless of what the CODE is, yes he needs to change the filters for sure.
