This is kind of an off shoot of the rental thread. I have test driven several units, spent hours on this forum, and have learned a lot in anticipation of my first MH next spring. I know, without owning one yet, that you can't hand someone the keys to a 40ft DP after a brief tour, and let them borrow it for the weekend and expect a happy ending. But, how do you handle the family members (brothers, parents, in-laws) who don't have a clue, but expect you to loan it to them like it is a car? I certainly don't want to start a family feud over a luxury item, but I don't want to roll over and let them destroy it either.... What advice/stories do you guys have to share on this?

I know this sounds way to simplistic but in the end what you are going to arrive at is some variation of "Just Say No". Three years ago I could have written your letter so I have walked in your shoes. JMHO.

Saying "no" may create bad feelings, but not even close to the bad feelings they would create when (not if) something happens to your unit.
Loan a 40 footer to a rookie? - No way; No how!! Heck, I won't even loan my fiver!
Quite simple - I paid for it, I insure it, I maintain it, I use it! Period. End of story.
Have lost one friend over this when I had a Class A, (and said "no", politely) but then they couldn't have been much of a friend anyway!

Ask to borrow something from them that they value highly. Something that you are sure they won't lend. Lending out your RV will just cause problems. Of course you could offer to rent it to them with a very high deposit, they would need to provide insurance and monthly rent comparable to what an RV rental company would charge.

When I spend a 1/4 million $ on anything, I just say, can you afford to replace it. Usually conversation stops right about there. My friends and I are of the same ilk. "A borrower, or lender never be". Robbie

My chain saw and my motor home fall into the same category. "These things take some special handling or someone could get hurt and I would feel bad if someone got hurt so only I am allowed to operate it". My variation of "just say NO".
