I'm still dreaming of Alaska. I've been dreaming of Alaska for at least 4 years now and I hope to be able to visit it one day soon. Have you ever seen the movie, "I Dreamed of Africa?" Well, I dream of Alaska....of it's majestic mountains, the wildlife and the breathtaking scenery it has and everything there is about it.

The state calls to me and it's unlike anything I've ever experienced before. It's daily...continuous....it is drawing me like a magnet and it is my ultimate dream to get there. It must be meant for me to go there....to experience it.

Please tell me the things you saw in Alaska....how did it affect you?

B I G

My first trip was in 1982. It has never left me.

You will be Changed for the rest of your life.

You must drive there and then Cruise there.

You will be overwhelmed just by Canada.

Overwhelmed is a good word for it. Alaska makes the Rockies look small. It's beyond gorgeous, beyond stupendous, beyond beautiful.

First trip there in 1984, and we were glad to go back in 2001. Haven't driven all the way there yet though - flew up the first time & took the Alaska RR to Denali; cruised there from Seattle the second time & flew home from Juneau. We want to go back again. And again.

DH said it's so big they measure everything in "Connecticuts" - as in, "that glacier is twice the size of Connecticut", etc.

You cannot exaggerate Alaska no matter how hard you try. You can get a better idea of what is there by buying the video/dvd Alaska by RV by the Howens. There may be others. You could do a Google search for something like `Alaska video' and see what comes up.

There were the swarms of no see-ums and the mosquitos, smoke from forest fires was choking. People up there are real down to earth, salt of the earth kinda people. Guvment isn't looking over your shoulder everything you do. Its a different world. Would I go back there? -- in a heartbeat.

We have been there three times. First time on a cruise, second and third by car pulling a trailer. We are planning a fourth trip possibly this winter to see the eagles in Homer. We have not seen all there is to see along the road system, much less the areas only accessible by air. If you go once, you will go again. The state just calls you back. There is always something else to see or do. Here is the link to our blog from our three month trip this summer.
Alaska 2008

Unfortunately we had no control over the weather there this year. Even with the rain, it was still a great trip.

Alaska is a tonic for the soul and peace for the mind. For those fortunate enough to see the sun set over Mt. Susitna, to see the pale gold of leaves in the fall, to see the lush richness of the tundra in high summer, they will have forever memories of Alaska.

Alaska is best enjoyed as an experience, not as either an aspiration or a memory, but the strength of aspiration (and in my case the strength of memory) can be the conduit by which the experience becomes real (once again in my case).
