I was just looking at 2009 Jayco Jay series the 8 foot, which would be plenty for me and would run better behind my RAV4, plus seemed to have pretty good ground clearance. But at the same place they also had Fleetwoods, which also looked pretty nice. The options you can get with them still stymie me.

Another primarily rental place had a 2005 Fleetwood SeaPine that was $3000 appr but showed a list price of about a $4000. For a $1000.00 bucks I would get the new one.

Anyway, any opinions on Fleetwoods vs Jayco 8 footers?

And there are tons of RV Sales that rent up here, some only rent. And I was finding some good stuff on Craig's list (but just sold...rats).

I am also in the Twin Cities, and I just bought a PUP off of Craig's List. My budget was a bit lower than yours, but I got a decent condition 8' Flagstaff for $1400. I just had a 3-way refrigerator put in that I picked up off Craigslist also, and I'm set.

There are rentals in the Cities, but I'm sure you could come out better buying, if you will use it enough. I have rented a few times, and I wish I had bought before, and saved myself the rental money.

On the other hand, when I have rented in the past, I have done so with private parties, and been very satisfied. I just advertise on the Craigslist for the city I am travelling to, and have the person deliver the camper to the campground at which I am staying. Saves me the gas of pulling it, and the owner sets it up, so they know I won't break anything. :-) It has worked out great, but I've been staying in one place at a commercial campground. If you were going to move around a lot, that wouldn't work.

I would post in the poptop forum, I think there is one, and see what they have to say. They would be able to tell you about quality and which features to get or stay away from.

Also, NADA.com can show you approximate values for used pop ups.

I recently emailed a guy asking why his ad for his used popup(about a 2001 model) was over 6k and the NADA guide showed it less then 4k with all the options listed. Of course he never replied.

There are many people out there that think their stuff is worth more than it is. Don't get suckered

I had 2 different Fleetwood pup ups over an 8 year period. I started with an 8' model before moving up to the 12' one. We were perfectly satisfied with both models but the 8' one had very little storage, no water heater and did not come with an electric water pump. Both had a propane heater & cookstove. I quickly fixed the missing pump issue. Neither model had a built in toilet but we just got a porta potty. We could use a much taller potty in the 12' one. Neither had an AC and about 2 years after getting the larger one we fixed that omission prior to a southwest trip. The little one went to Alaska its second year, towed by a Subaru wagon.

Mad Owl,

You should check with this website - www.popupexplorer.com

I am a member there - my username is just "newguy" and there is a midwest club that gets together for a few rally's every year.

I have a popup that I bought new and have had for a few years - I love it and would not want anything smaller - it's a Fleetwood Allegiance (the same floorplan as the Sun Valley)

its a 12' popup and it weighs in at just over 3000lbs fully loaded with all my junk. (including the rooftop AC unit)

I tow it with both a big truck and a 2005 VW Passat TDI. The Passat does a nice job of towing it, and if your RAV4 is a V6, it would tow it just fine.

If you want to chat more about popping up, please feel free to PM me.

I'm off tomorrow in a rented Class A motorhome for a trip to Montana!

Well, Here's my problem. My wife looked at the sparcity of the 806 Jayco and decided the 1006 was more to here liking. Well the price went up. I am just not sure that my RAV4, 4L, would like hauling that as well.

I also looked the Fleetwoods over and they look probably even a bit nicer. I am also a new type buyer, but the 2009 are out and there must be a number 2008 hanging out there?

I've had no luck on Craig's List and I checked out NADA, but I have no idea what all the accessories these campers have. I would still like and 8' but with warm water.

So unless I get lucky, it doesn't look like I could afford one this winter but maybe by next spring (although I bet they are cheaper now).

Thanks for all the advice,
Scott

Scott,

I bought mine from Hilltop RV in Fridley. You might want to check them out - as they sell BOTH Jayco and Fleetwood popups and have a nice indoor display of them.

(Ask me how I know - I bought mine there!)

Is your RAV4 a 4-cylinder? The towing capacity is probably pretty low - I'd guess 1500lbs, which is going to really limit your camper choices to something you probably don't want to spend your $$ on... IMHO...

Buy your second camper first, otherwise you end up spending tons of $$ on a future upgrade.
