I own a 2002 gas Newmar Dutch Star. I have intermittent starting problems. Banging the fuel tank gets the engine started. After the first occurrence I had the fuel pump repaced. After a few days without problems , the same starting problem occurred and banging the tank worked again. I have been told that the electrical connector to the pump can be the problem. Any insights & advice would be greatly appreciatedThankyou

Heres a tip for you and any other Workhorse owners. When I had a real job I had a fleet of Workhorse chassis step vans. One in particular had a regular problem with its fuel pump going out, usually in the same town on a too regular basis. I even considered that the driver was in ca-hoots with the garage owner and splitting the cost of the new fuel pump and labor. After investigating a bit closer, I found that the driver did indeed run his truck nearly empty every week in order to buy fuel from his buddy who had a service station. By doing so, it caused the fuel pump to overheat and burn up. Moral of the story, don't run your fuel tank lower than 1/4 tank, the in tank fuel pump needs the fuel around it to keep it cool. This may or may not be your problem.

I've heard this about Ford's also. My son burned out the fuel pump in his Dodge V-10 dually and they told him the same thing.

I'll agree about not running the tank low too often with ANY brand chassis or passenger car that uses an in-tank fuel pump. They're all designed to be cooled by the fuel.
In this particular case, since banging on the tank helps, I would suggest cleaning the electrical contacts, then put some dielectric grease in the connector before reassembly. That will help to prevent corrosion.
On my 2005 Workhorse chassis the connector at the fuel pump had the hot feed for the pump, the ground, and the wires for the fuel gauge sender (which is built into the pump assembly). By cleaning all the connectors in that plug you should eliminate any problems. I don't know if your 02 chassis has the same setup or not.
