CHV_FRK wrote: That is OUR real world experience. 5 new chevy diesels (2 company, 3 personal), only 1 new dodge diesel and 2 older ford diesels. The only trans we've had worked on other than the dodge is one of the fords at about 89K for a replacement.
The decision was made to try a new Dodge and our experience has just not been good. When you loose a shop truck for a week that's equipt with racks for a half ton with nothing it's a problem, especially when it's less than a year old.
From what I've heard the manuals were bulletproof. That's all that was stated. It wasn't an assault as you are trying to make it.
I suppose I'll just have to go sell my truck to buy what you have so you consider me smart! Or maybe you can head on over and we can hook together and see who breaks first. Maybe then I would be as cool as you and you'll let me in your cool club.
Geez.... Go ahead and rant on....
*edit* And yes, if I paid 50K for a new chevy and got 13K on it with what should be light usage for a 3500 series vehicle I would be pissed and I would consider it a piece of crap.
Ooooh! A tow off. The hallmark of intelligence. Nothing says testosterone like hooking two trucks together and trying to ruin both of them.
BTW, per your post you were considering all HD Dodge auto trannies pieces of crap. Not just the one your company owns. That was the issue with your statement. Apparently one bad apple does ruin the barrel for you?

Actually, the "weakest of the automatics available" (48RE)will reliably take increased power better than a manual will.
There are a lot of guys running close to 100hp over stock with the factory 48RE.
The stock clutch behind the NV5600 and G56 won't reliably take more than about 40-50 additional HP.
You can upgrade the manual for a whole lot less than an auto though.

IB516,
Thanks for the information. Actual numbers and especially those with visual confirmation are always a joy. As for the transmission comment, with a name like CHV_FRK, our friend must be a fan of those bow tie products. He along with many others. With some of the neat stuff they are building these days, I don't blame him. So in light of that name, I just gotta take it as a light hearted comment made about " brand X" and be thankful for him and everyone who comes on here and shares experiences, stories, and real information. That little comment helped cause this very interesting thread to extend to 2 pages and promise of more. Keeps me up late at night and continually coming back.

The 48RE is the most reliable tranny ever installed behind the Cummins. It has proven to be better than the G56 manual. The 68RE may eventually do better but they had some issues in some '07.5 trucks. The other thing to consider is you can rebuild a Dodge or Ford tranny for a fraction of the cost of the Allison. I can tell you the integrated exhaust brake on the Dodge is impressive in mountain towing.

Gotta loved those straight sixes, they put the torque where you need it for towing.

No. I did some searching, but I didn't find anything I would consider reliable info on that type of spec.

Watch the mileage numbers from the HyperTech tuners. Use only GPS mileage and actual fuel usage numbers. They are famous for screwing with the odometer calibration.

I just caught the mention(?)of the problems with the 48RE. I agree with it being an issue when buying a Dodge. Not to be repeatative from another thread but, CHRYSLER could have stepped up and fixed this tranny by upgrading the torque converters and solenoids, instead coming up with BS excuses as to why it broke and leaving owners to pay the bills themselves. It's not an Allison!

Please prove it!
With a name like Lariat trucker I have to assume that you have a Ford, probably one of those junky 6.0L IH diesels too!
