Altho it sounds like these folks have it together once the child is born, they are certainly not making any effort to limit their brood even now.
Good article about them . I looked it up 'cuz I knew nothing about them until this post.
Yes, maybe I am a spoiled American, but I think overpopulation is the root of most of the world's problems, from territorial wars, spread of disease, poverty, environmental degradation, violent competition for resources, illegal immigration, etc.

To heck with responsibility, I just think they are nuts! Eighteen children, I can't even imagine trying to raise them. As for the show I don't think it is sending the wrong message. I'm sure they are all getting something out of opening their home to the cameras.
I've seen a couple of shows that have been done on this family, they look like a happy, healthy, well looked after bunch of kids. They take care of each other and help the each other out.
If I were to worry about any of them it would be the mother, having all these babies has got to be putting a lot of stress on her body.
I have always wondered how many of them would remain childless or only raise 1 or 2 children of their own.

Well said!

You know the funny (as in odd) thing about our neighbor is that she is only three years younger than me and seems no worse for the "wear" from giving birth 13 times (one was stillborn-remember she has two sets of twins). She is active, in good physical shape, seems youthful and energetic. I am in awe of her actually. You hit upon something that is another of the reasons I admire her & their family... there are many reasons now that I know them.....
They are raising their children to be independent, hard working, tax paying citizens. It may not be what I chose but who am I to say it isn't what they should choose.

How on earth can this woman's body bear so many pregnancies so close together? I admire her spunk and ability to endure.

I'd bet she has the bones of an 80-year-old from so many children.

Overpopulation?
The entire 1st world is declining in population as it is. The US and the few other countries that are increasing in population are only doing so because they have a high immigration rate.
The 1st world isn't the (direct) cause of overpopulation, the 3rd world is.

No doubt they love their kids and are doing a good job with them, but that woman is seriously depleting her body, I hope she lives to raise the younger ones. I have osteoporosis and only birthed three kids. Mrs Dugger must be of extremely hardy pioneer stock.

My dad was one of 16 children (18 if you include two stillbirths) My mom was one of 7 and I am one of 5. These people are raising a family with love, responsibility. I'd rather see a happy family of 18 than a whole roll of welfare recipients who can't even be responsible for one child. She says that she sees each child as a gift for God so her faith is a large part of bringing these children into the world and instilling in them a sense of goodness, etc. More could probably stand to benefit from learning from her. Heck I gave up after having 2 kids because childbirth hurts like h*ll and I wasn't about to go threw all the "all day sickness" and then childbirth again. I believe that's why the lord gave my one of each! Cause as soon as our son was born I told DH, we've got our family, I've been thru the tuff part so off you go to get snipped! It's the least he could do...he did! )
My grandma of 16 kids was as strong as could and unfortunately passed at 95 because she slipped in the tub and hit her poor head. Up until that time she was out in the yard shooting a basketball with us, no kidding, the good old hold it in two hands, swing up and down and let it fly. Boy I miss her!

I think any parents who feed, cloth and provide for their children without government assistance send a most positive message. Regardless of how many they have...

Matthew B - it is true that the non-developed world is where the unchecked population growth is - and the existing population and birth rate there is 2 or 3 times the west, so any decline we have is more than offset by their increases. But every body on the planet makes it harder to sustain our current lifestyle and resource use.
Once it was predicted that the world population would stabilize around 4 bill, then 6 bill, now they say b Bill.... But who knows?? I fear we will see worse wars over territory and resources in our lifetimes.
