The wife and I were talking about how we saluted the flag in 1942 when we were in kindergarten. ( we are both 71 years old)

We seem to remember that we held our right arm straight out with the palm up.

Then at some time, they told us, to start off by holding your arm out while we say, "I pledge allegiance to the United States of America" then we would bring our arm in and, place our hand on our heart, as we continued.

As I understand. People complained because holding the arm out straight, looked like a 'Hitler salute'

I can't remember when they did away with holding the arm out with the palm up, and just putting your hand on your heart..

What do you guys and gals remember?

Harry

That's way before my time. It's always been hand over the heart that I can remember. There is the United States Flag Code which is actually a Federal law which says how you are supposed to address the flag. Although it is federal law, it is an administrative law and you can't be arrested for violating it. For example, per the Federal law you are supposed to place your hand over your heart during the National Anthem too, but watch any sporting even and see how many people don't do that.

I remember saying the Pledge with my right hand over my heart when I was in school during the 60's & 70's and still do so today, but I don't recall a salute other than the ones the Boys Scouts or color guard does. I'm younger, I know, but I'm also old enough to remember saying the Lord's prayer every morning as well. As far as the National Anthem, we always place our hands over our hearts when it plays.... I'm from a long line of veterans and I can't imagine standing & listening to it any other way.

I'm only 47 and we were taught the hand over the heart for the Pledge and the National Anthem. The Cub Scouts helped with that one.

think you are saluting the wrong flag..seems to me there was a "person" who had a similar salute, only their palms were down....

I am 70+ and I don't remember your described "salute"
