I am winterizing for the first time. Drained water heater but want to know, do I put the plug back in or not? I read a couple of different posts.
One said to put it back in because the thread build up rust and won't seal again.
Others have said to leave it out(including my dealer Tech.)
So what's right. Thanks

I put mine in. Don't want critters finding a place to live for the winter.

I would just put it in loosely so if there is any water it can leak out. Remember to tighten in spring.

Put it in to prevent critters entering. I know from experience you do not want to smell cooked wasps.

I agree that putting it back in will retard any rusting of the threads.
I left mine out one year and had to spend a lot of time with a wire brush on the plug and a wire wheel on a Dremel for the hole to clean the rust off so I could get a good seal.
BTW. I go ahead and tighten my plug, as there is not enought water left in the heater to do any damage if it freezes. JMHO

Remember Atwood tanks are aluminum and Suburbans are glass lined steel.
Suburban tanks are the ones with steel hubs.

On the other hand, you probably do not want boiled bug juice in your next cup of instant coffee either!
I used to put mine in just enough to catch the threads.
