We just came back from two weeks in the area of the Great Lakes, and I have a crate full of paper "stuff" I picked up along the way. I was going to make files for each state and keep anything that looked useful. I still have a huge bag of similar stuff from last September's one-month trip through 20 states...also unfiled. And now I'm thinking, do I really need to save most of this? I had NONE of it (other than road maps) before I left home--all of it was readily available at visitor centers as soon as I crossed a state line, and often even before that.
What do you save? Do you ever actually refer back to any of it if you go in the same direction? Do you ever save campground maps of places you've stayed? What about glossy "magazine"-style things that have maps, attractions--and lots of advertisements? What about info from places that looked cool but you never got there--save it as a reminder for the next time?
And considering the next time may be years from now, and it's probably all available on the Internet anyway.... does anyone want to help me out and tell me to just toss it all NOW???
Debbie--who just noticed--gotta add Michigan to my map!

We used to save everything. Got to be so much that I did a major clean job of all the books, maps and brochures. Now down to a Next exit, Woodalls, Passport American and Wal-Mart map book. Use the computer for all the other stuff. GPS has all the POI that we need.

I like to make a photo-journal of the trips (other than the weekenders) that we can look at later on. I like to keep the brouchures, maps, etc...to get some ideas and some things that I might add to the book....some are of pictures that I didn't get the chance to take, but wish I had!!
I usually print the my camera photos (digital) right onto the journal's text (using the insert feature) and then will paste the sections of maps or things I've cut out of the brochures. I put these in page protector sheets, in a loose leaf notebook, with a special cover that I slide into the notebook jacket.
After that, I usually just trash the rest, or if I think it's important enough, I'll save it in the sleeve in the back of the notebook.
Works for us....might work for you too! But, as you noted, it's just a bag full of paper, until you do something with it. You might want to save it until the winter, and use it to start a fire in the fireplace!!

Dump it, it's trash. Will be outdated within probably 6 months and you're losing MPG carrying it around with you.

We saved everything for a short time, but it adds up way too fast, and I am more likely to want an updated map/brochure/etc. when I go back. So now, we use them, then turn them back in so someone else can use them

I only keep it for a week or two. I have found that most of the information is on the inter-net if you need to reference it again. Some of it will ever have their web-site address.

I usually just keep a campground map and mark the spots we liked so we know which site we'd like to get if/when we visit again.

I love and save maps, even though I use my GPS to navigate. I have crates of maps going back (insert large number) years. I collect state maps, BLM maps, national park maps, campground maps, county maps, contour maps, relief maps--all of 'em. My all-time favorite is the AAA Indian Country map.
All the rest of the stuff I'll pick up again on my next trip through.
