A .22 rifle works great, 'possums are too stupid to run. We regularly run over then around here, we see more flat 'possums than round ones. Once when we lived in VA one jumped into the basement window well. I got a shovel and took it out and pitched it into the field next door.
About 10 minutes later the 'possum jumped back into the window well. I guess they are attracted to the light. I took the shovel again and this time carried it a couple blocks away and gave it a heave.
I would have shot it but DW won't let me.

Have one running around our neighborhood. I'm wondering if that's why the cat was riled up last night. The cat is every bit as big as the opossum.. if it wasn't for rabies might be a interesting fight to watch.

Opossums will not contact or spread rabies. Skunks, raccoons, fox, and a lot of other wild animals can contact rabies, but not opossums.

I learned some things about opossums after our dog was bitten by one in the yard and one thing was there are very few recorded cases of them having rabies. Another thing I remember is you have a better chance of contracting a disease from a family pet then being in direct contact with one. Give it a search and read about them. I think they are neat little critters and wish they still came around, but the dog has put a end to that, he doesn’t play well with other animals.
A couple years ago I saw a mama with her babies clinging to her going through the yard just like in the picture.
Still have a faint scar on my thumb from being bitten by one as a teen, they really do play opossum and can do it... well

Being in the construction work it is great fun to see what happens when you put one in someones work van. A new guy came on the job and him being a city slicker and us being country boys. Well old possum found his way to the rear of the van and sat up on the spare tire with his mouth wide open.
The guy open the van door and possum 2 feet from him, with mouth wide open! He slammed the door, ran back and said"did you see the size of that rat!" Poor guy would not go in his van till someone grabed it by the tail and tossed it. Oh ya, we had a good laugh and the guy was a good sport about it too.

My first encounter with an opossum was thinking the neighbor's dog had killed one - it was laying motionless in the yard. I put on a pair of gloves, and picked it up by the tail - about halfway to the garbage can, it "woke up" and was really irked about me carrying it!!! LOL!!! After THAT scare, I learned to pick them up with a shovel and carry them to the woods across the street, where they'd wake up and go about their business - the neighbor's dog never really hurt them.

You will quickly understand the "shoot the critter" mentality if you've ever had a possum in your house! Don't Ask Me How I Know!

A skunk decided to build its home under a small lumber pile in my backyard. I had covered the lumber with a black plastic sheet, and planned to use it 'soon'. The price tag for trapping and removing the varmit was $200, so I did it myself. I cut small slits in the plastic and poured a whole box of mothballs in there. And, the skunk was gone in a couple of days.
I also have an occasional possum that comes around digging small holes in the dirt.
