We Traveled the route in 2007. A interesting trip to do once in your life and I do mean only once! Prepare to be eaten alive by Black Flies. Getting in your vehicle even with full bug suits on is fun because you have several hundred of the little buggers swarming around you and they come in with you. The bug suits are so close woven no air gets through so their is sweat involved also. The route has several nice senic spots along with the 1,000 miles of everything looks the same, and then their is the dust lots of it unless it rains then their is the mud. Prepare for 15 to 25 miles per hour on most parts.
I got my tee shirt and when I wear it everyone says " Where is Labrador I thought that was a dog"
The people along the route are the nicest people on earth!
Aloha from Kauai

Black flies, deer flies and mosquitoes can be a real problem in the north. The bugs are seasonal here in the Laurentian area of Quebec,April and May would definitely be a risky time to do an outdoor trip if you cant handle bugs, what do you think about the northern part of their trip LK? Maybe the OP can reverse the intended route so that he/she would be traversing the north in July or August when most of the bugs are presumably gone

Check the dates in the details on my Labrador Album, jambo. You will understand why I found campgrounds quite full in Baie Comeau and Gaspe. The construction workers holiday (last two weeks of July??).

I will say again, and repeat again. Camp in locations where winds are. Near water so there is along distance for winds to travel.

I was thinking of stopping at this location:

One warm up of tea or coffee and I decided to take the hint that there is a place where one can park and plug in within the company town of Churchll Falls. Black top, but bug free. It was late enough in the day to be chicken.

You might say there are two seasons in Labrador, snow and black flies. One needs to learn how to deal. Once you do that you can have more fun. & when the Quebec North Highway is lengthened almost to Blanc Sablon, I will go again. I will probably go to Matane from where I live now and take the ferry across to Baie Comeau and go from there.

In that case i'd strongly recommend to the OP the purchase of Insect protection suits Otherwise the swarms of biting insects will ruin your trip to Canadas north.

Thanks everyone, we have decided to not do this trip for now in our Winnebago MH due to two reasons - Black flies and the 100's km of gravel road. If we change units to a truck camper, then we might reconsider the trip. It is not likely they are going to have the road paved in our lifetime.
Again, thank you everyone for your input, as always it is very helpful.

Frank

PS. Now to figure out what plan "B" might be.

Just be on high ground and stay away from bogs-swampy areas.
