Gout can be treated on a basis of each outbreak, or can be treated with daily meds. Gout is typically "set-off" by eating aged foods, including wine and cheese, or organ meats. I know from experience that it is quite dabilitating!

I would recommend that your friend visit his/her general physician and get the proper meds to break up the uric acid (which forms as small crystals typically accumulating in the joint of the big toe, but not always). With the proper medicine, relief can come as early as 24 hours.

I have learned that there are some home remedies that are helpful, and I snack on dried cherries and drink cherry juice as a preventive, and when I get a flareup, I drink more juice and water. It might be a superstitious belief on my part, for all I know, but it seems to work, and it is better than sitting around being too afraid to move.

Google "Gout and Apple Cider Vinegar" for lots of info.

Gout and Apple Cider Vinegar will tell you that the acid in ACV actually turns the blood to more alkaline.

Edit: I am speaking from experience, I have an arthritic knee that responds overnight to a shot of ACV. I do not have Gout, but Gout is a form of arthritis.

There is a medicine, can't remember the name of it... that will give you almost instant relief from gout. Don't take too much though because it can really, really upset your stomach!!

To keep gout away for good... take Allopurinol for the rest of your life!! DH takes one every day faithfully...

Gout is also associated with kidney stones.. because of the acid.

It is certainly VERY painful. He needs to see a Dr. the sooner the better!!

I take a daily med called Allopurinol. Keeps the "purines" down. Fresh cherries help, beer and asperagus are bad. I still drink a beer or more each night. I had an attack about ten years ago. Very dibilitating. Good luck.

The very best (And legally the only) medical advice I can give is to SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP....

I have a friend with Gout as well. He was advised to avoid high acid foods (IE: Tomatoes) and as others have said, there is medication.. Gout is often an annoyance however it can become serious if ignored.. So SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. In other words.. SEE A DOCTOR. I suspect a doctor in General Practice may be thebest one on this, at least for the first visit.

My dad has gout, so I'm learning about it. One thing we were told is that ANY form of alcohol can cause the gout to flare up. From my research on-line, we found that cherry juice (as Milt said above), definitely helps! Actually, it's the concentrate that's better. Dad takes a teaspoon or two of a "thawed" frozen concentrate every day. It really DOES help to keep it at bay . . .

Who do you believe? I think maybe your best all along would have been to see a doctor because this is "obviously" not the site for medical advice.

The cherries are the #1 "natural" way to combat it.

Also, avoid pork, orgam meats (liver, gizzards, etc..), and fried foods.

Since it's caused by high levels of Uric Acid, you also should limit intake of salts, "sport drinks", coffee, tea, and increase water intake.

If "they" are portly, then LOSE the WEIGHT.

If it doesn't get better, go see your doctor.

(and that's your "professional" medical advice for tonight)
