I was offered a new job this week, more money, better benefits, MUCH better job security, but it will be a commute of about an hour and fifteen minutes versus the 25 minutes I drive now. Paying for the gas is not a concern I will get a company vehicle and a gas card.
The only reason I have even been looking for a new job is that my company has been closing down for 3 to 5 weeks every quarter for the past 18 months. I make great money and I love the time off, but with 16 weeks or so on unemplyment a year great money becomes just decent money.
What do you guys think is, the commute a deal breaker?

Not for what you are being offered. That "MUCH better job security" would be the cincher for me in this economy. Just get some books on tape and listen to some great stories while in the car. Might even learn a foreign language.
Good for you.

If it's an 8 hour day, now you're looking at a 10.5 hour day. Also the area of the commute is something to consider: how bad is the traffic and if it is bad will that contribute to excessive stress levels?
I commute about 40 minutes one way and would not be too happy with a much longer commute. Audio books make it bearable as far as I'm concerned.

It's right through the heart of Dallas from the north on I35, to Loop 12 down close to I30. Yuck.

Wow, sounds like you'll have to battle some heavy traffic, as well as an un-believable gas bill!

I am in the process of completing a home purchase that will increase my commute from around an hour to an houre and twenty minutes.
The increased drive will be much safer and nicer than the current drive and the better quality of life the new area offers will be well worth the extra time.
I will still stay in my RV a few nights a week at work and this hepls as well.
I could get a job with the same company (but with a different branch owner) only 5 minutes from the new house but my current employer and job of 18 years is well worth staying.

I commute about an hour each way to work every day. I don't mind it at all, Really. It gives me time to prepare myself for the upcoming day and gives me time to unwind at the end.
I have my favorite talks shows I listen too and on occasions I have even called in

Security would be a big deal for me too. Much more than anything else right now.
I'm leaving my current employer for a new job next week. I weighed two offers against each other. One was $5k more and very secure, but a 1 hour 15 minute commute. The other was the same 40 minute commute I have now and a bit more risk. It was a real hard choice for me to take the one with the shorter commute; the pay wasn't the big deal, it was the security that made me think real long and hard about the longer commute.
Is carpooling an option, at least part of the time? You said that the cost isn't a big deal since the employer is picking it up, but I also find the convenience of not driving half or less of the time is real nice.

Ugh.... I hate a commute like that. I used to commute through bad traffic and I sure don't miss it. I've been on the freeways around Dallas about a half dozen times and that's enough for me. At least the folks there are nice, there's just way too many of them.
1/2 of my commute is a bit heavy (nothing even remotely like Dallas though!) and the last 1/2 is very rural. I sure relax and enjoy the second half. Too bad you're not fleeing away from town for the entire commute.

Would and has already been a deal breaker for me.
Have to get up too early, get home too late and just plain beat.
20 miles is the max I would go today and that's pushing it.
