Well, I drive 20 miles to a train, take a 50 minutes train ride, and then have a 15 minute walk after that. I live in the southern part of NW Indiana and work in Chicago. My commute is about an hour and 45 minutes each way. Partly because I take the train and don't drive straight through. I would spend less time if I drove but I can't handle the extra cost of gas and the traffic. I enjoy napping on the train. I hate the commute but the pay is why I do it. I'm gone for a little over 12 hours a day.

If you can't find work within 30 minutes drive of your home, for just a job, you need re-training is my belief. Of course, then there's the self-employed among us that travel the continent to close deals, and maintain our key customers. This is not the norm, just the way it is in some fields of business.

I commuted 32 miles one way to Downtown Dallas for over 40 years. Sure the traffic is bad most of the time, but you live with it. What will your hours be? Mine was 7 til 4, not as bad at that time unless someone spit on the road.

I commuted to work on my bicycle for over 20 straight years before I retired in 2001 and I continue to use my bikes for most local errands. I also use my Kawasaki ZX-11 unless it's raining then I use my Scion XB. The only time I had a long commute was in 1970 for about 6 months as a salesman in a photography store in Jersey City. I watched the World Trade Center get built back then from a few miles away.

If your current job is job safe except for the known layoff period and you could pick up a side job during that time, then I'd opt for that. But if in especially this economy you think your job is at risk for loss and this other company seems stronger financially then you gotta do what you gotta do. If it worked out could you move closer to that area? My DH commuted 2 - 2.5 hrs round trip each day for 7 years and it wore him out. No easy ride, all traffic, the kids were little at the time and of course once he walked in the door it was all daddy daddy let's play!! He did too, but he was exhausted and finally changed businesses so he could be closer to home and less stressful commute. He'd never do it again, if he needed to change jobs he'd take it to start and if it seemed like the good thing to do then we'd relocate closer to the job.

See if you can work with them on a flexible schedule. . . go in late, leave late / go in early, leave early / go in early, take a long lunch (if you go the gym, etc.), leave late). What about Mon-Thurs 10-hour days? It might take longer, but you could jump on the train in Carrollton if it goes near your destination - at least you won't have the stress when you arrive.

If you can avoid the heart of rush hour, it's not that bad. . . although getting in before the sun rises and leaving after it has set can be pretty depressing. Also, see if they can eventually move to 1-2 days of working from home (depending on the nature of the job).

Just throwing out ideas. . . many businesses understand the time, financial, and emotional commitment of commuting and will work with employees to find creative solutions.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful replies and the not so helpful one(you know who you are).

Well the decision was made for me. The employer decided that unless I moved to within 30 miles of the job, they would go with someone else. I can't do that. Oh well. I was both disappointed and relieved at the same time. Ever had that feeling? I'll just keep looking.

Thanks again guys.

Yes I have! Don't worry, that means there is another job that will better suit your needs out there for you to find.

Best of luck from one of the gals.
