I assume the converter boxes we need to buy for our non digital TVs are powered (to work their magic). Am I correct? If so, are there any that are 12 vdc?

I searched for one, and found none. A small inverter would be an option possibly. I saw a tiny 75 watt inverter that was not much larger than the cig.lighter adapter itself.

The Artec T3A Pro is powered by a 12V adaptor. It's popular and cheap, but I don't like it very much. (Lower sensitivity, no pass-through, crude on screen menus compared to my DTV Pal.)

I helped a friend install one in a Winnebago Adventurer bedroom. There was only 12vdc to the TV area, so we put in a cigarette lighter splitter and a variable voltage converter from Walmart. The DTV converter required 9vdc. The converter was about $15 and worked out nicely, just make sure the current rating is as large or larger than the converter requirement.

Costco has a very compact 175 watt inverter for $20 that plugs into a cigarette lighter. I would just get the Insignia box, use the inverter and be done with it.
I was going through the same dilema a few weeks back. I posted a review of the boxes. I am sure you can just click on my profile or whatever and see my topic postings.

that's the one that I bought. also passes thru 12 volts on another plug in so you don't lose the hookup.

My advice is to do it the simplest and cheapest way, which has already been mention.
Remember, some time in the future you will end up swapping out that old TV for a new one and everything that you do now will be mute.

This features link does show that there rae a few that are 12V (look in the right column. They use a 120V adapter to get the 12V but 12V adapters are also available from Radio Shack that will power these 12V units from a regular 12V jack.

Also, keep in mind that if you find a 12 volt tv that is using a simple cigarette lighter plug instead of a transformer unit outside of the tv, it will limit your options in the future. If you decided to upgrade the tv later and wanted to use this one in your home or whatever, you would then need to buy another device to convert household voltage to 12 volts in order to watch this tv.

That's basically what I did for my Insignia and the set-up worked great on our 2 1/2 month 10,000 mile trip this summer. On our unit, I tapped into the 12 volt feed for our DVD payer to install an extra 12 volt power port (with switch) for the small inverter.
