We have had schipperkes in our family for over 14 years now. I was making a camping reservation yesterday on the phone, and was asked what breed of dog I was bringing.

Me: "He is a schipperke"

Lady: "A what?"

Me: "A schipperke." Then I explain where the breed originated, what the original purpose of them were, etc.

I get these questions no matter where I take him--even the pet store (where you would think they might know a little about dog breeds).

Who else has a breed of dog that they always get asked, "What breed of dog is that ?

When we had a Kuvasz, we were asked all the time.
For the Norwegian Elkhound, people usually thought of the Wolfhounds instead.

Present dog gets a lot of queries too ... and our honest reply can be only "purebred meathead". He's a very handsome large mutt that could be a combination of various breeds, depending what you favor. But he's meathead, through and through.

We do, so I understand completely!

When we are out walking we almost always get asked about their breed. When we reply "Lhasa Apsos" we get some rather humorous attempts at repeating their breed name. Like "Oh Lapso Oopsies I've heard of them" or "Loosa whatsa?" or small children seem to say something like "Lotsa Oppies, they sure are cute". I just smile, say the name correctly and then give them a short history lesson on the ancient Tibetan breed of dog.

We get a lot of inquiries about Katie. She is a miniature Australian Shepherd (or North American Shepherd officially since 1992). We even get inquiries about Maggie who is Chihuahua through & through!

People all the time ask what breed she is. I tell them Bichon Frise, and they say like a poodle. I don't keep her in the Bichon full cut, so can see where they might think that, except for the tail, the ears, the body shape, the nose, the height, weight, she looks just like a poodle. LOL

I was most likely the first person on the West Coast to obtain a Shib Inu. They were not even yet accepted by the AKC, just the JKC (Japanese Kennel Club) yet! Since 'Sumo' was a reddish color, with creme highlights, people who saw him being walked would remark "Is that a real fox?" Sweet little boy lived 16 years before he checked into the "Great dog park in the sky!" SUMO SAN

We had a very fine mutt dog and my dad always called him a Siberian Squash Hound- nobody ever questioned him!

haha...doncha love people? I have a large,at least 1/2 Standard Poodle (We *know* his mother was a standard, but who knows about the father??) He's a strikingly handsome dog and looks very poodley, but with a long tail since he never had his tail docked. We hear a lot of comments everywhere we go: is it a goldendoodle, a labradoodle? Some kinda doodle, I'm sure.

Chock, that reminds me of several years ago when we live in KC, Mo we got a dog from some folks (free) and the ad said (mom) registered Keeshound and (father) a neighborhood romeo, so it was when we got there the last puppy was a male no less and so it was that day in 1982 we took Sam home with us.
