Willow is the 3rd Lab I have had that will suckle on a blanket waded up or a pillow. However, she seems to be content doing it for hours. I finally gave her a chair cushion today and she has been sucking on it for a couple of hours!!! It really seems strange because she was not weaned too soon, so that is not it. What is nice is it keeps her occupied and out of trouble. We will see if she keep it up tomorrow. Any thoughts?

When we got Lucy, the breeders had a teenage son who spent a lot of time with the puppies, when one was ready to go to their new home they were given a little care package and in it was a hot pink blanket that was made by this teenage boy, each one was different but what he did was sleep with it for a couple of days and then he put it in with all the puppies that last night.
Lucy slept with that blanket for months, it was her secuity blanket, all the scents from her early life, she must have suckled on it because many times she would fall asleep with it in her mouth, I never actually saw her do it but I assumed that was what she was doing.

Hmmm... And I thought my goof Lab Hershey was only one who did this!

Hershey, my 8yo Chocolate Lab (who is eating popcorn with the DW at the momemt!) loves to cuddle and suckle with this big, fuzzy green ball/ toy of his! We did adopt him at a young 6 weeks, but good Lord, he loves to eat! So weening was not a problem.

Maybe the behavior is kinda like cats kneeding their paws when they are content?

Treats all around!

My 14 year old Standard Poodle still does it. Takes them back to when they were a puppy.

Very sweet Sher! Sounds like the breeder was a good one, how nice of them to provide her with a security blanket.

None of ours has a blanket that they suckle on but there is a nap blanket behind our couch for them. Petey does something cute with his baby (a stuffed cow that is almost completely worn out) every night when we tell them it's bed time he finds that cow and brings it into the bedroom with him. He isn't very interested in it any other time but he wants it at bedtime. He actually sleeps with it, often times with his head resting upon it.
