Shutting off SSID really doesn;t do anything these days, any of the WiFi sniffers can easily see the router. If you want to lock it and your PC down, use STRONG WPA (not WEP) encryption. I use the same 63 digit code form the routers at home, RV, and my travel/ hotel router. NOBODY is going to break that. Go HERE for a one-time, never to be repeated password.

So are the speeds of the 3G cellular cards almost as good as DSL, I read on other sites that they rarely reach advertised speeds.

We travel an average of 12,000 miles a year, with Verizon, Wilson antenna & amplifier. Since we got it, would n not be without it. In three years only found but one place where we could not get Verizon service. That was in Yosemite Lakes campground 6 miles out of Yosemite. Mountains close all around the campground and no towers. Could not even get cell service from the nearest town on the road in. Good service in Yosemite itself.
We did find some locations where we did not get broadband last year. But, since we got the new Verizon in August card, we get broadband even when roaming. With National plan no charge on roaming. We did get a cardslot Card from Verizon. I like it better than USB, most inside the Laptop instead of hanging off the outside. Cant imagine connecting an antenna cable to a USB card, seem to tenuous a connection to me.
I too have Verizon cell phone service and our laptop has a card for the internet. When ypou speak of the wilson antenna which we have, what is the amplifier ? Does it have naything to so with the internet?
I ask because we have the Verizon office card or something like that, and the internet is another $60 a month. Is that what you use?

We have Verizon cell phone service, and the aircard for Internet.
The amplifier increases the power of inbound/outbound signals so you get more reliable service in mountains and further from Cell Towers. 90% of the time we get 4-5 bars for a signal on the computer, when the cell phone without the amplifier has 1-3 bars. It gives us an average increase in signal of about 3 bars. We have checked on Tower distance from the park at times they are 50 or more miles away. Even when we could not get any cell phone signal, could still get on the Internet.
Once in an emergency, we broke down on a narrow dark road. Put out reflectors, and tried to call for tow with the cell phone, no service. We plugged in the antenna & amp. to the cell phone, and got a weak signal, but got help. We checked later and found that the nearest tower was 78 miles away. We felt that call, paid for the amplifier.
Fortunately, when we bought it, the guy in the park we got it from suggested he also drill the phone case, so it could take the external antenna. The phone was already equipped to use it, with the plug. But Verizon had a case on it, that covered the outlet so we did not know it even existed...

Thanks for the info. The antenna then gives you better internet service. Does the aircard cost $60/month?

true high speed EVDO mobile broadband from verizon is widespread, and continues to expand at a pretty good clip.

I have read all the posts and notice that no one has mentioned anything about "sharing". I also have a cradlepoint router the CTR-350 which I pruchased about 18 months ago. It has worked flawlessly. Now about "Sharing"
Take a look at your contract with Verizon (or whoever you have) and see if you are limited or unlimited. If you have a plan that has limited time (or bites) you may not want to share your router's access code. If the people or person uses it and D/L video etc you could go over your limit and be charged a pretty penny for over the limit usage. On my older USB727 contract (it was pruchased as unlimited) and as of last week when I checked is still Unlimited.
This post is just to caution you and others about possible excessive usage and possible hight bills because of it.
