I have recently accepted a position in Panama City, Panama. I currently live in Memphis Tennessee. The cost of shipping a vehicle is ridiculously high and I am considering taking a couple weeks and driving to Panama. What are the road conditions through Central America? If I have proper passport and other documentation proving my assignment in Panama, will I have problems going through the Central American countries?

Driving to Panama may be more of an adventure than a driving experience! Here is a link to Jim Jaillet's web site. Jaillet writes in his "Panama or Bust" website.

Depending on Your circumstances it may be more advantageous to lease or purchase a vehicle while You are in Panama!

Roads are pretty good all the way if you stick to the Pan Am highway. The biggest issue is passing through larger cities which can be a challenge. I like Panama City. It's cheap.

When we were in Catemaco, Mexico last spring, we encountered a caravan of about 15 rv's of all sizes that were on a return leg from driving to Panama and back.
I forget which company, but it was one of the big ones that have a glossy booklet with caravans all over North America.
So it is doable and being done.

Not a big deal to drive to Panama!
Just follow a few rules:
-don't drive it in the rainy season (drive it in March/April);
-don't drive at night;
-realize that the roads are, in the vast majority of stretches, 2-lane, once you're through Mexico's toll highways and into the Central America leg (from near Guatemala all the way south).
The road surfaces, for the most part, all the way to Panama are fairly decent.
Have fun, and don't place an absolute deadline on your arrival date! Be a bit flexible.
Cheers,
Silver-

Lucky you!! What a great city. Just have to drive like Mario Andretti or get run over! no street name posts, either.
How much is the shipping? I would guess $2500 or $3000 from New Orleans or Houston. Will they let you bring the car in duty free?? If so, just be happy that you can sell the car there for twice what you paid when you're done!
