So.. I'm already past the point of ordering the camper, I suppose this is more of a 'will I kill myself' post.

I'm planning on towing a 17' Hi-lo with a Jeep Liberty, properly equipped to (ya ya, in 'theory') tow a 5000lb capacity item. I have no grandiose plans for 30% inclines and know to check the prevailing wind direction and speed, complete with shock-bolt crampons handy to immediately blast hold-downs into the highway should gusts be on the way.

'Will I kill myself or should I go back to the dealer and tell him to order the 15' hi-lo before its too late?

Thoughts?

Wind will have VERY little effect on a HI LO or most any kind of expanding trailer. You COULD end up killing yourself but probably won't have anything to do with those two extra feet.

I'd check those numbers. No way you can have a higher GVWR (maximum weight of the Jeep) than GCVWR (Maximum weight of Jeep AND trailer).

Everything looks good! Please make sure you get some kind of anti-sway device. I drive a Liberty(company car); the short wheel base and hight center of gravity is like a wind sail during normal driving.

I can only imagine what it would be like w/trailer in tow, when a truck flies by you, or on a windy day.

Good luck and have fun camping!!

bfaber,

Using my 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited, I towed a TrailManor 3023 (23' closed) about 6,000 miles over the course of a single season. Not through the Rockies but through Smoky Mountains. I used a WDH (Equalizer brand) hitch and McKesh portable extended mirrors. I was barely within my max tow capacity of the Jeep. It worked. That was year 1 of RVing for me. Looking back over 5 seasons of RVing now, I may have went for a lighter RV to give me more margin for braking.

Your Jeep is rated much higher than mine was. I do not believe I had a tow package on it.

Best of luck,

Jim
