I had a Jeep Liberty and I towed a 20 foot patio boat with it. The patio boat and trailer is I think about 2400 pounds. It's not that heavy, but it is bulky. Although the Liberty had enough power to pull it okay, the short wheel base made it a little scary, especially in the wind. I didn't use an anti-sway device so I don't know if that would have helped. This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't pull what you're talking about with a Liberty on a regular basis. I realize Jeep says a Liberty can tow 5,000 pounds, but I don't believe it. I would suggest asking the dealer to let you test tow it just to make sure you feel safe with it.

that is the same experience my friend had. some times you are pulling the unit. other times it is pushing you.

I had a Toyota 4-Runner that had a tow capacity of 3,500 pounds. At that time I had a boat that weighed in at 2900 pounds on the trailer. I don't know how Toyota thought that thing could tow 3,500 pounds as it barely could do 3,000 pounds. Any incline at all would slow me down to 45 mph and I wouldn't even have considered taking it into the mountains. To maintain 55 mph on the freeway I had to keep the gas pedal on the floor most of the time.

I've driven many suv's that rated at 3500 towing and this one. There is no difference in the Liberty than the others. In fact the Liberty seems less powerful, less stable, and inadequate brakes alone I hate to see with a trailer. The only difference is RWD. Initially I would of expected better of a Jeep product but who knows. I'd rather tow 5k with our Escape and most here think that even towing a popup isn't safe with this model.
