Bright light in neighbors back yard.

I am looking for some advice and thought that this would be the best place to seek it.

My neighbors behind me are paranoid that someone is always trying to break into their house and have installed a very bright mercury vapor light on the rear of their garage. It lights up my bedroom like it was daylight. I tried to reason with them, but their answer was it is my yard and I will do as I please. I called the police to see if their was some ordnance against this, but there is not. I have started constructing an 8' fence to block out this light and it is working very well. I want to paint the backside of the fence in florescent orange and green colors, but my wife disagrees. She said I would bring myself down to their level. I want them to see what happens when you have inconsiderate neighbors. What do you all think, should I paint it or not?

I would. The mistake you made was telling the wife!

Why can't you use a window shade(s), it's cheaper?

Of course not, even though I understand your frustration.

Take the high road...so few do nowadays, you'll feel good about it in the long run.

Again, it's my wife. She doesn't want a shade in the bedroom. We have blinds and they do not block out the light completely. The light also shines into other rooms of the house. I would have had to move my TV in order to watch it.

Buy a pellet gun.

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

As someone who loves looking at the night sky, I find light pollution just as offensive as all the other varieties. Here is a link to an astronomical group that fights this, you may find some ideas that you can use.

As for painting the fence, I don't know, he could just paint over it.
I would be tempted to hang a few sheets of aluminized mylar sheets in my yard and reflect his light around the neighbourhood. If there are enough complaints the authorities may do something about it.

While it's tempting to be rude, it would be better not to do so. What happens if your neighbor retaliates by doing something else to bother you. Then, you feel you need to get back at him again. Is it worth the chance of this situation escalating? You and your wife (since she also has to live with the consequences of any action you take) need to decide together whether or not to paint the fence obnoxious colors.

Let us know what you decide and the result of that choice.
