Thanks guys for all your comments and suggestions. I am going to investigate the local zoning laws and see if I can get some relief there. Talking to the people is of no use. She is the nutty one, always thinking someone is breaking in. When we were still talking she said the houses on both sides of her were broken into. When I talked to the police, I asked them about it. They had no record of it. She also said someone had broken into her house, took a shower, and cooked breakfast. Then left the dirty dishes. She has no trespassing, beware of dog signs and the signs from the burgler alarm companies posted prominently around her house. I never see the husband. For the time being I am going to continue building the fence. I already have 3 8' sections up and it blocks the light from my bedroom. I am still P.O.'d that I have had to go to this trouble and expense (have you priced 8' fence boards lately) in order to block the neighbors light from my house. (there is a chain link fence separating our property and I am putting it far enough back so I can get behind it and paint it (that is still an option) Thanks again..

Cat, I did suggest a motion detector when I made the initial contact about the light. The suggestion was rejected as absurb..........

Then it may be time to buy some very modern & quite stylish bamboo shades with a blackout liner. Tell your wife they are the latest in fashion for interior decorating. We love ours, as I said they are very stylish and add texture... After all, we ladies must have lots of texture in interior design. One thing though, we don't need the blackout liner since our neighbors aren't that close to begin with... but if they were and had too much light shining at us, I would have ordered the blackout liner.

Once again, good luck... I have faith you will get this thing figured out, without a pellet gun.

We have those too, very nice, and the liner works great. Nighttime all the time.

The best reply I've read so far.

Does this mean that I can force the City to turn off the street light that shines in my front yard and the windows of the bedrooms on the front side of the house?

No.

But you can request the light be shielded to keep it from shining into your house. Whether you get anywhere or not probably depends on how much you push the city council and/or power company. I'd find out who maintains the lights (city or power company) and request a shield.

Simple solutions, you have to love them

Good luck with the problem, it would drive me nuts. Being reasonable and a good neighbor is so hard for some people.

Haven’t read past here, but I work my way up the local governments, there should be something available to deal with this because it doesn’t sound reasonable on their part. Maybe code enforcement?

The blinds work fine for in the house, but what about when you want to enjoy your backyard without the glare?

I've got a 20,000,000 candlepower spotlight. I would light up his life until he got the message.

Hrm.... I know a good solution that should get in your neighbors craw a bit, but not do anything really bad.

Poplar trees. They grow really fast, and you can plant them like arborvitae. Build your fence, then plant them along the fence on your side. The trees will grow fairly good sized in a few years and start blocking out the neighbors backyard in its entirety. Plus, they'll drop six tons of leaves come fall, depending on how the wind blows, a good portion could wind up in the neighbors yard.

OR, go to the hardware store and purchase a few of those exterior roll up blinds and hang them from your eves in front of the windows.

OR, tell your wife that she can either be for the installation of aluminum blinds or that she cannot say another word on the subject.

Also, double layer curtains work wonders. My folks have that on their house curtains. They have a heavy white fabric back layer and a beautiful floral pattern on the front. They weight a ton, but you can make it almost as dark as night on the first floor in the middle of a summer day.

Um, judging by the "problems" your neighbor's wife seems to have.... "paranoid schizophrenia" comes to mind...if you *really* want to create trouble..paint some staring eyes on that fence....LOL!!!!!

Wow Howard.....From your description of your neighbor lady I would say she has some real psychological problems that a bright light certainly won't "cure".

If your already putting up a screen fence, I'd suggest a windmill gadget that has several different color lights that flash as the windmill turns. Put that lil' bugger on the other side of the fence and let the neighbor have a turn at all the pretty different color lights flashing across their yard....day and night.

I would suggest starting with assault rifles. If that doesn't work then give some hand grenades and mortars a try. If they still don't comply, 2,000 pound laser guided bombs is the next option. If that doesn't do the trick then going nuclear is the only viable option.
