I sanitize the lines in the spring when I de-winterize.

Fresh water tank, before the beginning of the season and at the end of the season; black water tank, never; gray water tank, never; galley tank, never.

To winterize, I put RV antifreeze through each sink trap to equal about 1/2 gallon in each gray water tank. I also put 1/2 gallon in the black water tank through the toilet. I sanitize and drain the fresh water tank and put nothing in it. When I de-winterize, I put 1/2 cup of bleach into the the end of the white hose, then connect the hose to the house and fill the fresh water tank. I then drain it and refill it. That's it for me.

thanks, I know the fresh water tank and lines,I was thinking in the spring would be best as it would get the antifreeze out too. thanks -Do you ever put bleach in the gray tanks or does it matter?

I sanitize the freshwater tank (also the whole freshwater system) in the spring before our first trip for the season. Black and Gray tanks I "sanitize" after every trip with bleach... not to drink out of them (lol!) but to get rid of any lingering smell and to help prevent nasty stuff from growing in them.

Every once in a while I'll run a bleach solution like I use for sanitizing thru my gray and black tanks... Why??? It kills off all the bacteria in the tanks which can cause odor... I don't say it right or wrong to do this, it's just what I do and it works for me...

Actually, with all the paranoia I see on the forums with campers getting out their bleach bottles and spraying down everything from water spigots to sewer hoses I'm kinda surprised more people don't do this... We all know that gray tanks can often smell worse than blacks tanks and that is being caused by decaying bacteria in the tank... A plain water flush will NOT kill that bacteria so a bleach solution flush isn't necessarily a bad idea...

BTW - I'll do the flushes at the beginning of the season and whenever odor or fresh water tanks dictate that it needs it...

If you were to install a quickie flush or a tornado black tank rinser, you would not have to worry about sanitizing the black tank. the rinser will clean it out so well you will swear it is a new tank. In fact I like the quickie flush I have so well I also installed one in my grey tank. the soap build up was so bad sometimes so I put one in and now it drains every time.

I sanitize all three tanks - fresh, gray, black - before a big trip which usually turns out to be 2 or 3 times a year.
