I recently purchased an 2008 Chevy 2500HD 4X4 CC with the duramax diesel. The stock 16" tires look too small for the truck and I want to upgrade to something larger. It is a daily driver for me and we pull a 30 ft Coachmen Captiva TT. I do not want to effect the towing or payload capcity of the truck....any suggestions on rim or tire size?

Why are they "too small for the truck?"

Maybe what I should have said was that I do not like the appearance of them and would like to have a larger profile or would like to fill the rear wheel well a little more.

To go much bigger on tires you'll need to consider a lift. Many of us on this forum tow with lifted rigs with no issues.

Rules of thumb:
4" lift will allow for 33" tires
6" lift will allow for 35" tires

BFG and Toyo are well respected brands to start looking at.

Do you go offroad?

Are you open to lifting the truck?

Do you have a budget in mind? Suspension Lift + Rims + Tires can add up.

Ocasional off road nothing serious though (tow friends airboat). Don't really want to lift the truck. I would rather stick with the stock height and maybe just invest in a differnet size rim and tire. 18" nothing too drastic. The new body style shows alot of undercaraige in the back.

If it were me I would keep the same rims unless you are going for a custom look. Tires go higher and higher as the rim size goes up but I am sure you know that. You could just go with a bigger tire and keep the 16" rim. Are you looking for a more aggressive pattern such as an all terrain etc... or looking to stay with the same pattern? If a more aggressive pattern I would recommend Nitto Terra Grappler's. A great off terrain tire and a good street tire. I am on my third set. I would think a set of 265's would look good on your truck. You could go higher if it's 4x4 but them you might start messing with you mpg thought not much. I do agree with you though, I see all the new GM dually's and while the truck looks great, the tires are to small for the wheel well.

Oops you said it was 4x4. With that said you shoud be able to stick 33's on there with no lift. I had a 2000 Z71, no lift and had 33 BFG mud terrains but if you don't want to affect mileage than 33's are a no-no. Hope this helps

You could move to 265's without sacraficing tow power. They look good on the '08's.

Or could go with 285/70 17's. But then you'll need new wheels.

Check with your dealer...... there's a 17" factory wheel available for that truck..... comes standard on the LTZ trim level. I think it comes with 265/R17/75's. My son-in-law has them on his 08 2500HD and they look decent, plus they preserve your factory GVWR/GAWR(RR) load ratings.

I have looked into moving up in rim size and you are right the $$ increases as the size goes up. I am not opposed to keeping the stock rims and just get bigger rubber. That would be the cheapest route for now. More aggressive patern would be nice and take up some space in the wheel well is what I am looking for
