Thanks for all the excellent info. Undoubtedly I'm not receiving any receipts, even from relatives, so it may not be working for me either.

Not being received or they do what I usually do - I click "no" as it gives the person who received the email a choice. It says that the "sender has requested a receipt - do you want to send a receipt" or something like that and it gives a yes and no option. They might be clicking "no".

If you want to test it and see how it works for both the recipient and yourself, just send an email to yourself.

IMHO if you want to know if it was received ask in your email. I for one have read receipts turned off on my computer and all computers at work. When I send items out that I need to be assured they were read I ask for a reply. If I don't get one I call, after a couple of calls people I deal with understand and hit reply. Since many have them turned off the read receipts are of very little use anymore IMHO.

You'll only get return receipts if the other person is also using Outlook. If they are using some other email client, you won't get a receipt.
I think return receipts are more for the business world, not personal emails.

Yes it does, but if you have multiple "personalities" defined (use it with multiple email addresses) the return receipt gets sent from the primary (default) personality, regardless of which personality received the email. I see this as a security flaw, as it can reveal an email address and full name to someone you might rather not see it. For this reason, I have my Eudora installation set to never return receipts.
Some people have mentioned what a return receipt will look like, but in truth it varies. The return receipt is an email message generated by the receipient's email program. What that email looks like varies widely depending on what program they use, just as how it appears when you read it may vary depending on what program you are using. (For example, some installations of Outlook using an Exchange Server will check off each recipient on the original message as they are read. On other programs, it will just show up as a regular email in your in box.)

Here is a copy of one of mine. There are a lot of details about the email, but this is the gist of it. You can send yourself an email and it will prompt you letting you know you are acknowledging the email. Then you will get the receipt back too.
Also, as Jeff said - there are ways to circumvent the process so you never really know.

This is a Return Receipt for the mail that you sent to jxxxxxxxxxl@cox.
Note: This Return Receipt only acknowledges that the message was displayed on the recipient's computer. There is no guarantee that the recipient has read or understood the message contents.
