I don't know if you have checked out this site, but it lists many great places to dry camp in the US.
FreeCampgrounds.com
While some of the "Camping" is a free wal-mart or tire shop that someone said they can park overnight for free, many are on BLM land and is true camping, not parking on pavement, or next to a paved road with heavy traffic on it.
BLM is Bruera of Land Management - lands owned by the American Federal Government. (OK I can't spell).
One of my favorite places to dry camp is Slab City where you can meet well to do and those doing well if they have enough to eat.
I am not sure what city or state in the US you will be crossing over in. So I can't give you any more information.

I havn't been everywhere, but it's on my list.

Here for starters.
Huatalco
May have a monthly rate. Looks like less than 3 bucks a night per person for dry camping.
Don't knopw of any places in Lukeville, AZ to stay before crossing.
Get Churches book on RV camping in Mexico a must have book. Have a most excellent adventure.

Swallow, Don't think of me as a prude, but please re-think your southern trip to Mexico and further south. I'm sure you know there is a war going on in all border states. Think of your family and your own safety. I've lived in Arizona all my life and can assure there are real problems in those areas. I pray you make the right decision.

That's going to be a fantastic trip down with Lots to see on the way! There are several RV Parks at Ajo Az which is only a short distance to Sonoyta. There is also an almost abandoned RV Park right at Lukeville . Gringo Gulch or something like that!
The Immigration/Auto Import Office was at Km 12 ?? Last Year, however the way things are changing it could be moved almost to the Sinaloa Border by now!
We haven't gone as far as Huatalco so I can't help You on Camping there! Keep Us posted on Your travels!

Organ Pipe National Monument is also a great place to spend a few days if you have the time. They have really good walking trails through the desert and a ranger will take you on a guided walk telling you about the cactus etc., they also have a FREE 25-30 mile van tour of the monument which is very interesting. The visitors center has programs and slideshows, there is an ampitheater at the campground where a ranger will give an evening show & talk about the desert. I can't say enough about it, we sometimes stay there on our way to/from Mexico and love it!

My advice is to forget about detaching your trailer because you are going to have to stop for the car permit anyway and you must have all vehicles present.

Why would anyone discourage travelers in visiting Mexico, which has much, much less crime than any USA city. I could go on and on, but do not want to start a duscussion. To each his own.
If you want to dry camp just north of Lukeveille, you can go just south of Why, on the west side, and there is a free 14 days area which is very safe and a lot of travellers stay there the night before crossing over the border. There is no need to take your toad or tow vehicle to get your papers as there is ample parking when you get to the immigration.
Enjoy your travels as I am sure you will find Mexico to your liking.
