Seems to me like this is a local issue. Having said that, these plans are designed with very specific hoops to jump through in order to get the money. In this case, the individual with the warranty DID NOT do exactly what was required to obtain his refund. He then whined to the media, and caving to the bad publicity, his money was refunded. The warranty company was well within their rights not to refund the money because the request was not made according to the contract. Frankly, if I were the warranty guy, I would have explained the refund process to the TV guy and showed how the request was not made according to contract.
Sorry, I think the guy who bought the warranty was wrong, and the warranty company was right.

Major automobile companies do similar things. Several years ago the alternator went out on my Ford one week out of warranty. The dealer where I was would not honor the warranty. After six months of complaining to Ford (I don't give up easily) and personal letters to Ford executives, I was finally paid at which time my local dealer (not the same one who did the work) told me that it is common practice to honor the warranty at least one month after it expires.

I had a problem with the transfer case on my Silverado 3 months after the warranty expired when we were at the Newmar factory in Nappanee, IND. The local Chevy dealer told me Chevy had agreed to pay for the whole thing - no charge to me.
