4X4 Trackers are towed with transfer case in neutral, Transmission, automatic in park, manual in second(by the book) stop every 200 miles and run engine with transmission in gear for five minutes.
Many tow manual transmission in fourth, in the event something happens so engine will not overspeed.

You can tow a 1996 Tracker 4 down if it is a 4x4. Put the transfer case in Neutral and the shift in 2'nd. Make sure the front hubs are unlocked. Ignition key in ACC. The Manuel states that you are to start and run the engine every 200 miles. Leave transfer in N, shift manual in second (auto in 3rd) and run engine one minute. Then repeat setup before towing again.
If not a 4x4, tow with the rear wheels on a dolly.

Need more info on your Tracker. Is it an automatic trans ? Is it 4X4, If so, Does it have auto hubs? A 96 2dr soft top weights around 2300 Lbs.

Yes you can. I did for two years. I was told to make sure the trans. was slightly over filled ( to the point that some fluid runs out when the plug is removed)

John, The advice I gave you above is from the Owners Manual, page 4-40 & 41.
It futher states: "Notice: If your vehicle has auto freewheeling hubs, or two wheel drive, do not tow it on all four wheels. If you do, your transmission could be damaged."
Apparently it has been towed if it has a brackett. And, as noted one above has towed one.
I give this information for information only. It's your Tracker.
