OK, so I'll admit I'm attracted to the new iPhone, but have also been disappointed with the phone offerings from Verizon over the years. Can you say BOOOOORING? I run a Verizon aircard in my mobile wireless router in addition to using a Verizon phone. So the question is what will I lose/gain if I make this switch to an aircard and iPhone with AT&T while dumping Verizon? I assume I'll HAVE to switch aircards for cost reasons? ($80/mo vs $60/mo) How are the comparative coverage areas?

Have you seen the full on-line catalog of Verizon offerings, or, just in store?? I found two I like that I hadn't seen.

Many here connect laptop to net through their phones. That might be a good cost cutting option if you switch or stay. Talk to sales people at both (or more) places.

You can see the coverage map on AT&T's web site.

I have an iphone with AT&T and Verizon phones. We are full-times and have found that the coverage is very close (in our experience). If I had to make a call, I would say that Verizon has slightly better coverage. We have had both Verizon and AT&T from Maine to Florida, across to Arizona and California and up to Oregon. It is very close to call. I don't know about the air cards because I don't use them, but I know that I have sent e-mail from the iphone all across the country.

Hopefully this is of some use to you.

Obviously you haven't seen the Storm yet.....

The Weather is looking a little stormy over at Verizon

And, it's Verizon only for now!

I never considered the idea that a cell phone could be boring. To me it is a phone. I make and receive phone calls on it. I don't text, pict, flix or any of the other costly passions that cellular providers have devised. I suppose that make ME boring in your universe. I do however think iPhones are cool.

That said, Verizon consistently beats AT&T in consumer satisfaction, if that means anything to you.

first, carriers no longer offer any discounts off monthly when bundling voice and data.

second, at&t's true 3g network coverage PALES in comparison to verizon.

in this graphic, only the darkest blue colors are HIGH SPEED 3G for AT&T:

by contrast, all the blue for verizon is HIGH SPEED 3G EVDO Rev-A:

and for those wondering about sprint, the orange areas are 3G/Rev-A:

additionally, i monitor coverage expansion press releases by the major carriers, and verizon does 10+ such releases for every att announcement. att's 3G expansion efforts really suck.

slabman, here's a cool idea. go ahead and get an iphone for voice, but not an att data card.

the iphone can connect via wifi to your mb6000 and surf at true 3G/EVDO speeds when needed!

Dump the aircard and the phone an get the BlackBerry Storm when it comes out and tether it to your laptop. It's going to give iPhone a run for it's money. Not as many bells and whistles when it comes to music but how many truely spend hours listing to music on an iPhone with it's short battery life.. any handheld for that matter.

Storm will give you what you want and no I don't work for Verizon.

Thanks for the ideas, gang. I'm sorry if I flamed some of you with the term "bored"...didn't mean for it to be interpreted so literally. Hey, I do spend a lot of time at my computer and not much with the phone...I just like gadgets....hope that's OK with those who are offended.

When I was with Sprint years ago, I was impressed with all the phone offerings they had and Verizon's offerings seemed pretty limited. When I go into the Verizon store, I still feel their offerings pale in comparison to other phones I see in use. Sorry, but that's how I see it.

Yes, that new Verizon phone does look good...too bad I just bought a new "boring" phone from Verizon. Maybe I can pay the termination fee and ditch this one.

Have you considered the LG DARE? It is Rev A and can tether to your laptop. Has GPS, etc, as well as a bunch of kid stuff.

Yes, I am also usually disappointed when I go into a Verizon store. It seems as if their help just hired in yesterday, and plans on leaving next week, with no desire to learn much of anything. The only phone they can demo is the one on their belt, which is usually a Blackberry.

I speak from some frustration in this, as I am giving serious thought to a Dare, but those people can do little more than turn one on. That is, if anyone remembered to charge it.

My young cousin just got an iPhone and was showing it off. I grinned and feigned amazement -- my Sprint Mogul phone already has all of that fancy stuff, and more!

My Mogul is not boring because I am still discovering all that it can do. Verizon has it's own version of the Sprint Mogul.

I use my Mogul as my backup internet connection. I use Bluetooth to teather my phone to the PC, but I could use a USB cable. My plan already included data for the phone, so no additional cost. Actually, Sprint wants to sell an add-on service called "phone as modem", but it isn't needed to tether the phone and PC (shhhh, that's a secret).

This wireless router will supposedly allow me to connect my phone with a USB cable and then share my internet connection with several PCs over WiFi. I may try it someday -- I'm a gadget nut too.
