Ok it looks like I am going to upgrade from my 2002 Chevy Surburban to a 2005 Gmc Youkon xl denali. Question is for $500 I can have the Denali certified. This basically means 12month/12k miles bumber to bumber warranty. 5yr/100,000 powertrain warranty (about 21 months remain with about 50k miles remaining- so i will run out of time before the miles). other stuff like road side service.

DO YOU THINK IT IS WORTH THE $500 OR NOT!

I am not going to be able to neg. this into the deal since I have a great price now as it is. It a matter of if I want the certification or not.

Any advice or folks that have taken this option would greatly help.

I kind of feel it's old enough to do this. As I get less and less able to lift transmissions while laying on my back, I consider "insurance" of this type more and more. You're getting a great price but on a used vehicle. The way it sounds to me, you get nearly two years of power train warranty on a used vehicle and a year of new car warranty. I think I do this. Just my thought...

I also was looking for a 2005 GM car - a Chevy Suburban. They are a hard find in my area!

I started out looking at certified ones. I ended up buying a Chevy Suburban from a Ford dealer that was not GM certified.

Been one of the best problem free cars i've owned in the last 10 years! A heck of a lot less problems than the Honda I traded for it.

So is certified worth it? Can't say. I really think it's a toss up either way - a certified car can be a lemon and a non-certified car and be a great vehicle with no issues. I really believe the "certified" part is really a checklist like "Check oil, check trans fluid, check radio, check brakes etc."

Better to see if you can get the service records if possible. This will tell you more than any certified sticker will. If not, do you have a mechanic that works on GM that you trust? For about $150 he could probably do the same check on the car for you.

I may be wrong but the 5 year/100,000 warranty is standard on all GM cars regardlesss as it comes with the car when it's bought new. I could be wrong though. I was at my dealer getting an oil change on my car when someone brought there's in with something. When they heard the noise, the service writer said "We know what that is. That's covered under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty". They didn't ask him if his car was certified, or if he bought it new or used.

So, yah! Not much help was I?

On edit: Just re-read your post - IF it includes the 12yr/12K bumper to bumper warranty with the certification then - YES! EASILY one little thing can run that much! HOWEVER, READ the warranty - bumper to bumper does not always mean EVERYTHING like a new car warranty and might have enough holes in it to drive the truck through it.

I was able to get 2.9% financing on my TV buying preowned because it was a certified vehicle. That sealed the deal for me.

As far as certified , I used to do those inspections all the time at GM, it's just going down the basic checks before it goes in the front lot. If their going to give you some kind of warranty or something , that might be worth it. I buddy of mine bought a used Tahoe last year with 30K on it
from our local GM dealer here in town, well it just blew the rear diff. out two weeks ago. He went back to the dealer, and they told him it wasn't going to be covered under any warranty because he didn't have his engine oil changes done there(smell a ripoff already), the diff. wouldn't of needed one yet. Well next he took it to a local mechanic shop to confirm the damage, and it really was the diff., GM wasn't BSing him. After really looking threw his paper work now, because he was freaking at spending $1200 that he really didn't have, he found some kind of extended
warranty policy in all his paper work from the dealer when he bought it. Next he called the extended warranty folks up, and they sent a guy out to the local mechanic shop to look at the truck still on the rack, they said no problem bring it back to GM to have the work done, and all that he would have to pay is for the fluids. So you now where he went back to grinding gears all the way. I think the dealer was wrong about not warrantying it, but a deal is a deal the fluid change clause was right in the paper work they shuffle in front of you real fast.

GMs certified program selling used cars is a joke. My wifes' '03 LeSabre was a certified used car and dang, it sure was used, hard. It was a program car from Hertz with 32k on it. The only warranty GM offered was the remainder of the 36k warranty. At 37k the brakes needed worked. I pulled the rotors and both front and rear rotars were at their min thickness already. The GM dealer offerend no help so I was out new rotars and new pads.
As with any extended warranty read the fine print of "exclusions" and actual parts covered.

I have never heard of brakes/linings to be covered by ANY warranty. those are normally wearing parts.
