Hi all,

We have 3 toads (towed 4 wheels down). The 96 tercel, the 65 manx, and the 91 4Runner.

The 4Runner is manual trans, too heavy, gets lousy gas mileage, and is too old.

So... A "new to us" Toad.

I envision something like the Geo Tracker

We want 4x4, auto trans (no, or simple, tranny modification required), nice quiet ride, good gas mileage, perhaps with a T-top for the sunshine in life.

Perhaps the Suzuki SX4, the Subaru Baja, the Toyota Tacoma ???

What do you pros like for this Toad Task?

Usually, 4x4 and good gas mileage requirements are mutually exclusive.

I'm fond of the Geo Tracker. Cheap to maintain, decent gas mileage, good seating for 2, fair for 4 and it is LIGHT. I can't tell it's back there. Pulling or Stopping.

I towed a soft top for 7 years until it needed a new top. Traded it for a 2 door Hard Top.

The SX4 crossover is all wheel drive and can only be towed 4 down with a manual trasmission.

Check out Motorhome Magazine. They publish an annual guide for most vehicles indicating if they can be towed and anything special you have to do to tow them. That may help you. Go to the lower right corner of their web page and there are links to .pdf files for each year.

Be careful of the Tacoma, have heard that none of the 4X4 Tacoma auto tranny are towable 4 down. I know the Tundra 4X4 isn't, as we were looking at them and the owners manual specifically said, not authorized to be towed 4 down.

LOL. He said a good ride, not a Jeep ride.

Sounds like a Honda CRV to me. Not a true 4X4, but excels in all your other criteria and does come with All Wheel Drive.
