LL Bean Goretex Cresta Hikers. leather/fabric or all leather.
Great ankle and foot support. Very comfortable. I'm comfortable wearing the fabric/leather version from 100F+ to below zero. (thinsulate versions are available) Anything short of ice or well established green riverbottom slime is near impossible to slip on unless you're doing something senseless. They will take about 5-8 years of substantial abuse before they start leaking and even then they're still hikeable. My last pair saw well over 1000 miles before I retired them due to leaking (the soles and support was still good)...ordered new ones the next day.
At least for me: Zero break in time. I'll go backpacking with a pair right out of the box.

We purchased Merrell Hiking Shoes at Gander Mountain; and are really pleased with them. We spent several weeks hiking in Colorado; and found they were very comfortable and provide good support for our feet/ankles. My husband has a fused ankle, and it was VERY important to find something for him that wouldn't cause him any discomfort. He couldn't believe how great they felt.
Happy Shopping - Sandy.

I do hike quite a lot (lately thanks to couple of lovely Jack Russel Terriers) but not having bad weather or mud issues in California, or Nevada never had a need for waterproof hiking boots.
For last few years I am in love with Sketchers. They are very comfortable and lasting long time sport shoes. Way cheaper than Puma that was my favorite before.

Ditto on LL Bean hikers. I have been using a pair for many years.
I like the gore-tex, so I don't have to worry about stepping in streams or walking through wet vegetation. Also they come in EEEEwide, which I need.
