I've taken a wire brush attachment and used my electric drill to remove the rust. Then apply oil and treat it as if you were seasoning it....always coat the cast iron in oil before storage..I store mine in bags so the oil doesn't get on other items...but never rusts again.

If you have a self cleaning oven, you can put it through the self-cleaning cycle. After the oven is completely cooled, open it up and vacuum up the rust dust.
Here's another method, electrolysis: http://idos.org/Chapters/tabid/270/Default.aspx#
Then there is plain old elbow grease with soap free steel wool.
Once you have it completely free of rust, you want to make sure it is dry. completely cover it in a very thin coat of oil, olive oil is good. (remove any thick spots with a paper towel). Bake this in an oven @ 400'F or more for 1 full hour. Again, allow oven to cool completely. If there are any sticky spots, you've used too much oil. Oil pan again. Season again @ 400'F or more. & also a 3rd time.
I have never had olive oil make my house stinky when seasoning cast iron!
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Clean it with some cooking oil, and re-oil it.

At hunting camp we uesd to put the pan or grill plate on the camp stove and boil water in them for awhile, wipe with oil and heat till clean. I know the oven cleaner method, mentioned earlier, works great as I clean the BBQ parts in the oven once a year. No rust no nothin using that method.

I've read this before and i have always wondered why you can't just take a sand blaster to it? Must be a reason, no one has ever suggested it, but I think it would be the fastest way to get the rust off and then start over to season it

A lot of good sugestions here. ALso here is a link to Byron's Dutch oven site which has all the directions for care and how to clean a rusty oven (Cast Iron Pan) and also recipes for Dutch ovens. Just scrool down to find the "Cleaning a rusty oven" Section.

Stell wool the rust off, then use oven as other sites describe. All of my cast iron came from under a barn that were put there by my grandmother MANY years ago. All the stuff looks brand new now and is a deep black glossy color.

Soak it in Coke, steel wool it, wash in hot water and re-season. Do this consecutively without any significant time gaps.
