What are the pros and cons of the MotoSat SL-5 HD dish and the Winegard HD dish?

After having 2 Winegard pieces of junk and the Motosat we now have, there is no comparison. Just look at 2 items on both and then make your own decision, thickness of materials and interaction of the parts with each other. My Winegards flip flopped all over the place, in the slightest breeze, but the Motosat is rock solid.

My experience couldn't be more different than The Texan. I installed the Trav'ler 3005 and am very pleased. Clearances are close, so no flopping and the searching is quick and positive. Very quick finding the satellite and locking everything in. I installed it myself and was impressed with the construction and ease of initial setup. We also use a DirecStar searching dish for our Hughes Net connection. I installed that one too so I'm somewhat familiar with with searching dishes. Oh yeah, the Winegard was just about $500 less than the MotoSat.

Well.. I don't have either one but I've looked at both and I can say Motosat is very well built

Just some quickies.

There is more gear slop in the Motosat. The mounting plate, while being longer on the Motosat, is not as wide.

The Motosat has plastic/vinyl covers on the mount - the Winegard has metal.

Manual stowing is far more difficult with the Motosat, if it should prove necessary.

The Motosat drive system is not sealed and uses a greased chain drive that will attract dirt.
The Winegard is a completely sealed system - all electronics and drive gear is sealed in a waterproof metal housing.

The Motosat IDU uses flashing LEDs for status. The Winegard has an LED display with messages.

The antenna type on the Winegard can be set from the display without looking up stuff in a manual.

The Motosat elevation pins are not plated and rust quickly.

Motosat uses a center pivot point instead of the ring bearing on the outside edge that the Winegard uses.
There is more side-to-side flex in the Motosat - when deployed.

Just lately the Motosat needed a software update to find the satellites, and the Winegard didn't.

The Winegard is less $$$

Maybe the Winegard is not making pieces of junk anymore.

I wouldn't buy either right now for DirecTV. They are in the process of changing their transmission so that all that is necessary for most people is a 3 lnb dish which is under design and will soon be on the market.

This is different from the Phase III dish introduced a few years ago for satellites 101, 110 and 119. It is, instead, a dish for the new 99, 101 and 103 satellites.

I believe that, if you are patient you will soon see other options.

It is unfortunate that the winguard got a bad reputation from the crankup dish that should not have been mounted on the Bat Wing mount, that proved to be too weak and unstable for a Sat Dish. They otherwise build fine products, and have shown that in the quality of their new automatic Dish There has been nothing but good feedback on them.
